Pocket City Farms

Pocket City Farms Pocket City Farms is an urban farm and community and education hub in the heart of Sydney. Pocket City Farms is all about Fair Food, Education and Community.

Alongside growing local, fair food for everyone in our society, we're passionate about engaging the hearts and minds of communities, schools and businesses across Australia to protect and enhance the lands we call home. We do this by educating Australians to think more sustainability and build their resilience to climate change, sharing our knowledge of regenerative practices, permaculture, waste

reduction, heat mitigation and water saving techniques. Pocket City Farms are working to bring urban farms to Australia’s unused city spaces. Pocket City Farms established in 2012 with the aim of establishing a model of urban farming that operates off three main pillars - growing local food, providing education and connecting community. We regard our Camperdown Farm as the first of many - we are working towards establishing or assisting multiple projects throughout Australian major cities. Our long-term vision is to see urban farming as a normal part of our society and urban fabric. Local sustainable food production close to where the bulk of our population live - and can connect with and learn from - is integral in securing a healthy future for our communities and our planet. Our model of farming is multidimensional – we balance growing local and organic produce with the goal of providing education on food and farming, and providing community connection through place and programs. Our first farm is nestled into our local neighbourhood in the inner west. Opened in June 2016, at Camperdown Commons, the farm has become a community hub where you can come and visit the productive ecological farm, pick up some super-local, chemical-free produce, get your hands dirty volunteering, take part in our composting and food forest programs, attend a range of workshops, events, and yoga classes, and bring your school, corporate or community group for a tour, talk or workshop. Importantly, the farm is a place to visit, enjoy productive green space in the city, dig your hands in the soil, and learn all about where exactly our food comes from and how it’s grown. The bowling greens have been converted into 1200m2 of market garden using organic practices to grow vegetables, herbs and salad greens. A greenhouse has been established to grow seedlings for the market garden and for sale to the public, and a 16m3 compost unit has been established for a composting program to turn over food scraps from the restaurants and cafes we supply. The street verge of the farm has also been planted out with edibles and is growing into a lush 180m2 food forest that provides free food for the local residents.

🥁🥁🥁(A very special) Throwback Thursday!!!

Before there was a farm, there was a vision….

And then a bowling club…. and then a WHOLE LOT of work to be done.

Pocket City Farms officially opened its gates in 2016... which means...we’re turning 10 this year! 🎉 🎂 🎉

Ever wondered how PCF started?

Back in 2010 Co-founders Emma and Zag (pictured) and their crew (Karen Erdos, Adrian Baiada and Luke Heard) had the vision to create a place in inner-Sydney where people could gather, learn and grow good food together. A place that would not only reconnect city-dwellers to where their food comes from, but to each other.

Through determination, persistence and the power of collective effort, that vision became Pocket City Farms.

More PCF history to come!

As our newsletter subscribers would know, Pocket City Farms is going through a big transition period! After 5.5 years, our brilliant and iconic CEO Jacqui Besgrove has left the PCF team to enter a new and exciting chapter. During Jacqui’s time at PCF, the site was nurtured from a post-COVID field of green manure back into an abundant market garden and social enterprise, teeming with life and community! She designed and implemented a vital source of income for the org, our corporate team retreat offering, and empowered a new generation of farmers through PCFs first Farm Incubator program! (This is where Chris trained as an urban farmer!)

During her time at PCF Jacqui had to commute from Wollongong to get to the farm. She is now stepping into work closer to home, allowing her to put down deeper roots in her local community! Jacqui’s unmatched vibes, humour, endless creativity and enthusiasm is already dearly missed on the farm. But do not fear! She is still deeply embedded in the PCF community and will be at this year’s Winter Solstice festival in June! So be sure to come along and say hello!

Luckily for us, the PCF core team has recently acquired a new gem 💎 (named Claire! Also featured in cover photo). Claire has just started with us as our new Education Manager, but her story with PCF began long ago. Claire has been a dedicated volunteer and star working bee chef for many years. It’s such a blessing to have her immaculate organisational skills, broad skillset and depth of experience on the core team going forward!

Recent visitors on the farm:

1. One adorable baby possum (temporarily got separated from its mum, but they are now reunited)

2. Several giant talking bananas? 🤨 Thanks !

3. A young magpie practicing its agility skills

4. A fluffy native Teddy Bear bee (we are VERY happy about this! They are highly efficient pollinators, non-aggressive, and essential for biodiversity. They are experts in "buzz pollination" where they vibrate their flight muscles to release pollen from flowers!)

There's never a dull moment at the farm! These visitors are a great reminder that farms are living ecosystems, providing habitat and sustenance for many non-human critters. We are happy to see the farm teeming with life, despite being in the city!

A tasty event that nourished the mind, body and planet!

We co-hosted a Lunch and Learn event over the weekend together with as part of Climate Action Week Sydney .syd

We learned about the pivotal role of a Planetary Healthy Diet in driving changes to make our food system more sustainable. The highlight was the lunch, showing that eating for the planet can be extremely tasty, healthy and brings people together in community.

Thanks to all our guests who helped make this a successful event!

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard getting the North Green looking beautiful, prepping beds, crimping and tarping green manure and lots and lots of w**ding. A shout out to our volunteer chefs who, along with , cooked up feast.
