Rain over the week restricted both cattle and sheep yardings as producers decided to hold onto stock, with most market reports noting increased competition among buyers. This resulted in a lift to all indicators for sheep and cattle, except the Heavy Steer Indicator.

BELVUE RANCH PRESENTS FUN FACT FRIDAY

Please join us as we celebrate four pillar topic strengths of the belted galloway breed as we move closer to our “STRIPED STOCK SPRING SALE” in October 2026.

WEEK 1 = ADAPTABILITY 🌡️🌾✅

🌡️Belted Galloway cattle are known for being extremely adaptable to a wide range of temperatures. Their thick double coat helps insulate them in very cold climates, while they also cope surprisingly well in warmer conditions compared to many heavier-coated breeds.

Some key points about their temperature tolerance:

* Cold tolerance: They were originally developed in the harsh, wet climate of southwest Scotland. Their dense outer coat and soft undercoat help them handle snow, frost, wind and rain very well.
* Heat tolerance: Moderate to good. Although they grow a heavy winter coat, they naturally shed it in warmer months. They generally tolerate Australian conditions well if they have:
* shade
* clean water
* airflow/breeze
* appropriate stocking density
* High altitude & harsh country: They are particularly well suited to rough terrain, high rainfall areas and colder tableland environments — one reason they suit Southern Highlands conditions so well.
* Efficiency: Their coat helps reduce the need for excess fat cover in winter, meaning more energy can go into production rather than simply staying warm.

🌾Belted Galloway cattle are often described as efficient, low-input grazers and are generally considered less selective grazers than many modern commercial breeds.

That means they will:

* graze a wider variety of pasture species
* utilise rougher forage and native grasses
* perform well on lower-quality country
* help manage pasture more evenly

This is one reason they’re valued in regenerative grazing systems and tougher environments

✅An enduring heritage breed renowned for natural hardiness, resilience, adaptability and efficient performance across diverse environments.
