Hektár - mezőgazdasági podcast Upcoming Premier September 13

In October of 2025, Lisa and I were in beautiful Hungary for the first time, thanks to András, F***y, Kate and Robert of the DEDES - Private Agroecology Project.

After the Regrarians Open Consultancy (ROC) the Hektár - mezőgazdasági podcast team and I went around the DEDES project and I spoke about the transitional steps that they were taking to make this acreage more productive, profitable, resilient and even more beautiful.

Thanks for the opportunity to be involved with this film and we hope that it encourages more people to follow many of the simple, practical and low-cost steps the pioneering DEDES project has taken as a leader in this part of the world.

Thanks to Gribek Dániel - agrárújságíró for sharing this with us.

Sláinte!

Regrarians Ripper Rotor (RRR) MK1 - 2nd Pass on a Gippsland Carbon Agroforestry Project

"...we should be planting strawberries..."

Some of you will have seen that earlier this year I designed and helped make this single-pass, non-inversion subsoiler & Ø40cm single-rotor hydraulic power harrow.

The problem I've long been looking to solve is how to use lower HP farm tractors at scale to do minimum-tillage, 'advanced soil preparation' for woody plant establishment. As a planter and manager of agroforestry trees, I also know how difficult planting is when you have s**t soil preparation and how poor the establishment and growth rates can be as well.

Regrarians started working with Justin Glass and the team at Covalent Land Australia in 2025, and this 609ha grazing operation in the Victorian High Country is the pilot for that relationship.

From our first meeting, my challenge to him was that mechanical soil preparation on large agroforestry projects using bulldozer rippers, disc-plows and one-pass preparation, was not only expensive, it also makes planting both inefficient and difficult.

The development of tilth, which farmers (and gardeners) are very familiar with, is not something you get with hyper-aggressive dozer rippers and disc plows + makes the use of knockdown and residual herbicides necessary.

Having significantly reduced the cost of preparation, the RRR is a form of 'strip-tillage', with a 50cm deep (using a Tilco Hydromax Ripper) x 40cm wide tillage zone (following 'Keyline®' geometry) being prepared over two passes—one in late summer/early autumn, and the 2nd in early spring, immediately prior to planting.

This site will be planted using BCC Plant the Planet 'Pottipuki' planting spears, and having been on the end of one of these on many projects, I know that the planting team will really appreciate the planting result.

Shane, the tractor operator, who is himself a mixed farmer (of 1000 acres here in Gippsland), shearer and forestry contractor, said yesterday, "...we should be planting strawberries..."

That's a great compliment and reminds me of that saying, "...you should garden like a farmer, and farm like a gardener..."

Yours and Growing,

Darren J. Doherty

Propagation - BCC Hiko V265 + V400 - Morus nigra

Been wanting to do this for a while and after getting some of these air-pruning/root-training containers (along with a fine Sunday), we potted up 86 black mulberry cuttings.

The tree is one of three we regularly harvest fruit from - I’ll get some more cuttings from another tree we’ve been gleaning from for over 50 years, with the other at my mother Esme’s home—which I transplanted from my grandmother Eileen’s last house.

At a project in India in 2023/24, millions of M. alba were propagated in a locally manufactured 300cc tray which while good, only had 12 cells per tray so took up a lot of room in the nurseries. The V-265 has 35cc less soil volume but has 28 cells per tray so its probably the most efficient larger cell tray BCC produces.

These trays were AUD$17.50 ($0.625/cell) for the V-265's and AUD$14.30 ($0.95/cell) for the V-400's. Using retail organic potting mix (AUD$13.95/30L bag) and it works out to be $0.12/cell for the V-265's and $0.18/cell for the V-400's.

With year old black mulberries costing between AUD$12-34/each, its a bit of a no-brainer propagating them yourself using cuttings which are free.

BioLite Camp Stove #??

We bought our first BioLite camp stove with the first crowd fund in 2012 and this is our 2nd after the first one died a year back.

We’ve given many away as gifts as they are such a great little unit.

This new unit heated up the percolator in 6 mos flat from scratch - i.e. lighting the fire and coffee ready - using some split Acacia implexa (lightwood) pruning I gleaned from George Howson’s Dalpura Farm a few years ago.

After the coffee I then used the grill attachment to cook up the last of the Maldon Quality Butchers rump steak.
