Did you know that the way you check an avocado for ripeness in-store could be causing bruising before it even gets home?

Over the past few weeks I've had the opportunity to speak with radio stations around Australia as part of the "Are You Bruising While Choosing?" campaign, helping raise awareness from a grower's perspective about the impact of incorrect avocado handling.

As growers, we put a huge amount of care, time and resources into producing quality fruit. When avocados are squeezed in the middle to check for ripeness, it can bruise the flesh, leading to disappointment for consumers, unnecessary food waste and losses.

The good news is there's a simple solution:

🥑 Check the neck!

Gently press near the stem end (the neck) of the avocado. This is where the fruit naturally softens first and is the best indicator of ripeness without damaging the fruit.
