So proud of my baby Stevie (Hollands Bend Topaz) over the last two weeks. Her first trip away from home starting off in the led classes with a ride or two at each new location. She has been lightly gradually started over the last 6 months and started in her first competition at Parkes in the Preparatory dressage and show classes.

We didn’t initially intend on competing her under saddle considering she has still had less than 40 rides under saddle. However, she proved herself to be a real show girl having no concern for the gazebos, show jumps or carnival rides only for showing off her Ferrari engine 🏎️

So excited for the future with this special mare ❤️💫

Why we hack out 🌲🐎

Every horse on our place, from green 4-year-olds finding their feet to old campaigners in their 20s all get time out on the trail. It’s not just a break from arena work, it’s part of the work.

Uneven ground, logs, puddles and hills teach horses to think for themselves and trust their feet. It’s proprioception you just can’t build on a flat, tidy surface. Add in kangaroos bounding off, deer crashing through the bush, and the odd goanna scaling a tree, and you get horses that learn to handle the unexpected calmly, not just the predictable stuff from the same old arena.

It builds confidence, sharpens their brains, and keeps the older ones sound and happy doing a job they know well.

It’s one of our favourite parts of horse life. Good for young ones learning the world, good for the old guard staying fit and switched on. Good for all of us, really.

Stole another outing on Dads pony for a great clinic with Teegan Ashby Equestrian , thank you to the Ironbark team for organising the opportunity!

Thank you to Teegan and our lovely group for giving me a little bit of confidence (and peer pressure) to jump bigger jumps than I ever would have. Biggest appreciation to Harry who will jump anything he is pointed at, so all I have to worry about is my own interference 🫣

Maybe if I’m brave I can see a horse trials in our future 😅
