The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Custodians of the two sacred cities Makkah and Madinah, where the rituals of Hajj, including Tawaf, Sa'ai, and standing at Arafat, are performed, has announced that Friday, 7th June 2024, is the first day of the Month of Thul Hijjah, 1445 after the Hijrah (Migration of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)).

It has been confirmed to the Australian Fatwa Council after further inquiries to the local and global observatories, that in Sydney, the new moon of the month will be born on Tuesday, 9th April 2024 at 4.20am AEST, the sun sets on the same day at 5.39pm, while the new moon will set on the same day and time, 12 minutes after, at 5.51pm from the horizon. In Perth, Western Australia, the new moon of the month will be born on Tuesday, 9th April 2024 at 2.20am AWST, the sun sets on the same day at 6.02pm while the moon will set, 16 minutes after, at 6.18pm. The method in which the Grand M***i of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council had determined the end of the month of Ramadan, the first day of Shawwal and day of Eid Al-Fitr is based on the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset and the possibility of sighting the moon. This is a method that many prominent and reputable global scholars councils have adopted.

The Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council acknowledge, understand and respect the Imams and scholars who may hold a different opinion, and request all Muslims to respect the different opinions on this matter and work towards the unity of the Muslim community in preserving the common values and interests that they all have and share.

The Grand M***i of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, and the member Imams of the Australian National Imams Council, wish the Muslim community a happy, joyful and blessed Eid Al-Fitr, and to remember their brothers and sisters in Gaza โ€“ Palestine in their Duaโ€™a, generous donations and ongoing support.

3rd National Muslim Community Annual Iftar 2024-1445H, hosted by the Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) at the Orion Centre - Campsie.

The National Muslim Community Iftar 2024-1445H was attended by Muslim community leaders and Imams, to break fast together, showcase the unity of the Muslim community in Australia and stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Gaza - Palestine, during a time, and in the month of Ramadan, the Israeli Occupation continues to strike and kill innocent Palestinians in Gaza, commit genocide, illegal settlements and violate international laws and UN resolutions.

STATEMENT ON CAS STUNNING IN POULTRY

CAS (Controlled Atmospheric Stunning) of Poultry has recently become a contentious topic. There is confusion on whether its application in the Halal slaughtering process is in-line with Islamic requirements for food consumption.

Upon careful assessment and consideration of the report results, the absence of VITAL signs and ECG indications, the Australian Fatwa Council has concluded that the practice of CAS stunning, in its current form, is NOT fit for Halal consumption under the Islamic laws and principles of Halal slaughter. The animal is deemed to be dead before the slaughter.

Therefore, this method cannot be accepted or certified as Halal for consumption. Any Halal certifications of CAS stunned facilities are invalid until an adequate assessment of the CAS stunned facility and its processes is conducted in line with the same scope inclusive of Vital Signs and ECG reports with expert interpretation, presented to the Australian Fatwa Council for assessment.
