Murrae Murray Greys

Murrae Murray Greys Registered Murray Grey Stud Murrae began with one pet purebred Murray Grey cow purchased with bull calf at foot. Further inquiries always welcome. PIC No. MKKE0386

Today it has grown into a medium sized registered Tasmanian Murray Grey stud consisting of 50 purebred breeders with the majority of these being stud registered animals. All are raised on commercial strip grazing conditions with normal rye grass and clover pastures, supplemented by hay and silage at certain times of the year. The markets Murrae has supplied to are the vealer butcher trade, private

feedlots and most recently Greenham background purchasers. The stud has a heavy focus on easy calving with big growth in 200, 400, 600 day and mature cow weights. Fertility is also a priority with all cows, heifers and bulls. Big scrotal size and fast pregnancy rates are also taken into consideration with anything not in calf or being infertile culled ASAP. Both the property and Murrae have a beef only status, (JBAS 6). All cattle are vaccinated with 7 in 1 and drenched with either Virbamec Plus injectable or Cydectin Pour-On.

Oops she’s done it again! Miss Wilma has just produced another quite impressive bull calf, (so far every bull Murrae has sold has been out of this cow, showing consistency is king). He will be registered as Murrae Winston (generally we have 12 months to register new calves with the society and this year after some serious illness in the immediate family, the farm needs have had to come first and stud paperwork second). But he should be registered and ready for a new home in spring. Currently he just tipped the scales at 349kg aged 8 1/2 months old, no silage, no pellets and no fodder crops, just plain old ryegrass/clover hay and pastures, plus Mum’s milk of course! Quite impressive since we had a couple of dry months earlier in the year where food was a little too tight for comfort. It’s always nice to be surprised at weighing time.

His older full brother Tremendous has been retained for both stud and commercial use along with their Dad Quality.

The newbies have arrived! Everyone has settled in well over the past few weeks with great temperaments, good feet and plenty of meat, just the way we like it here. All three of these were mainly selected based on bloodlines that have previously worked very well here before. Not to mention structural correctness, temperament, estimated breeding values and what would best complement and suit the needs of the current stud/commercial herd. Hopefully they’ll prove to be a smart breeding choice in years to come. Watch this space!

Another successful sale day and what a sale it was. This year’s motto was go big or go home with numerous mainland buyers and underbidders. At least Lady Luck was on my side for a couple of lots today and thankfully they were my first choices for both. Can’t wait to see what these new additions will bring into the stud. Thanks to the Wallace family for the pre sale viewing, information and sale day opportunity. (Photos taken from the Woodbourn catalogue).

Purchased in 2024 at the Woodbourn Murray Grey sale, these are Woodbourn Tulloch's 4W T163 first batch of calves here at Murrae and so far they have been quite impressive, (calves aged 4-6 months old in photos). A lot of these are actually heifer's first time calves which are no different in size to the mature cow's calves. A new focus of mine has been to increase the amount of meat and muscling evident between the rib cage and hind leg in my cattle which I think so far both of the bulls used are doing. Exciting times ahead hopefully as long as the food keeps growing!

Despite once again dry conditions for the third consecutive year, the 'W' spring drop calves are still continuing to grow and fill out nicely, (currently aged 4-6 months old). These guys are all progeny out of Murrae Quality MRG Q11 who has earned himself a well deserved break in the bull paddock this mating as his son takes over his duties (more on Murrae Tremendous later, all I can say is he is Tremendous by name and by nature). Although Quality still gets to play a very important part in the stud by being the 'back up bull' and a very dependable one at that.

Busy time here at the moment, did I mention we are currently house building? 😳 Anyway catch up time, final calf of the year arrived last week out of a Grey Lady heifer with an impressive milk bar for a first time heifer.
Then the boys were released into their respected mating mobs of females. Time for them to lose a few kilos I think. 😉🤣
