When we manage feral deer numbers for our clients, our goal is always to leave as little waste in the paddock as safely and practically possible. To help maximize our harvest, we’ve just added a new commercial meat slicer to the processing setup.

It makes absolute short work of breaking down these animals into perfect, even cuts for high quality venison jerky.

Pest control is a necessity for protecting local agriculture, but that doesn't mean the animal has to go to waste.

Whenever the situation allows, we make sure these harvests are utilized and turned into top-tier protein for the pot.

Pushing through wet paddocks and passing showers to get the local numbers down.

We pulled these Chital out last night, bringing our current tally to 11 deer removed from this single 100-acre block. That is a massive amount of grazing pressure taken directly off the landowner's pasture.

As always, we believe in ethical management. These animals won't be left to waste in the paddock and are already hanging in the cool room to be processed into high-quality protein for the pot.

There is still plenty of work to do on this property, with many more to follow.

Sambar on the Mid North Coast?

These two sambar deer were taken with the mighty 300 Blackout while we were out working on a fox control contract on the Mid North Coast.
Sambar are a rare sighting for us locally, so encountering these two was particularly notable. They also show the variety of feral deer we come across in this region.

So far, I’ve personally culled chital, rusa, sambar and fallow deer locally. I’ve also received plenty of reports of red deer, although I haven’t personally taken one in the area yet.
Large deer take some handling. My ute is specifically set up for our regional deer although these Sambar were pushing the height limits. Using a lifting frame and hoist arrangement to assist with lifting, loading and carcass handling in the field. Having that equipment available made recovering these two much more manageable.

For landowners, each of these species can contribute to grazing pressure, compete with livestock for feed and continue grazing paddocks intended to rest. They can also damage fences, young trees and waterways.

If you’re seeing deer on your property or noticing damage, get in touch to discuss a planned management approach.

Now is the time to protect your paddocks from feral deer grazing pressure.

With low rainfall and limited feed on this Northern Tablelands block, every bit of pasture counts. We recently culled 14 feral deer to help reduce competition with livestock and support the landowner’s paddock rest and rotation program this was the second cull with the first landing 22 deer putting this property total at 36 off 500 acres.

To put those numbers into perspective, using the NSW feeding benchmark for adult, non-lactating fallow does, 14 deer equate to approximately 17 dry sheep equivalents of feed demand.

That represents around 18.5 kg of dry feed equivalent each day roughly 550 kg over a month, or 1.7 tonnes over a 90-day paddock rest period.

Deer can continue grazing after livestock have been moved, putting ongoing pressure on paddocks intended to rest. Managing their numbers helps protect available feed, maintain ground cover and give pasture a better opportunity to recover when rainfall and growing conditions allow.

For landowners managing tight feed budgets, deer control deserves a place alongside livestock rotation and stocking decisions. Acting early helps reduce pressure before pasture becomes further depleted.

If deer are competing with your stock or grazing your rested paddocks, get in touch to discuss a targeted, humane management program.

Early nights on the paddock with less foxes the the land owner started with.

Unfortunately slow nights happen with these feral animals but luckily we still got one finish out, off to the next job.

Stop Feral Pigs from Eating Your Profits.

Caught up with a mob of pigs last night that had pushed their way straight onto the cattle feeders. We managed to clear them out and put a solid number on the ground, but it’s a stark reminder of how much expensive feed these pests steal from your stock.

Whether you are running a small block or tens of thousands of acres, we have the thermal optics and the professional experience to handle the job safely and efficiently.

Trading howls to get the job done.

We were set up on the feeders waiting for some pigs to come in when we spotted this female wild dog sitting up on a hill about 500m away.

Instead of hoping she would wander our way, we decided to strike up a conversation.

After trading a few howls back and forth, curiosity got the better of her, and she came right down to investigate. It was a fatal mistake.

Successfully culled and another major predator removed from the property. One less threat to local livestock.
