HOW TO BUILD A CHEAP BUT STRONG RABBIT CAGE AT HOME

As a professional rabbit farmer, a good cage does not have to be expensive. What matters is strength, safety, cleanliness, and comfort. A well-built low-cost cage can last for years and protect your rabbits from disease and predators.

1. ■ CHOOSE STRONG BUT AFFORDABLE MATERIALS
Use treated wood, bamboo, or metal frames with quality wire mesh for durability.

2. ■ RAISE THE CAGE OFF THE GROUND
Keeping the cage elevated prevents dampness, predators, and disease from the soil.

3. ■ USE WIRE MESH FOR THE FLOOR
This allows droppings to fall through and keeps the cage clean and dry.

4. ■ PROVIDE GOOD VENTILATION
Proper airflow reduces heat stress and respiratory problems in rabbits.

5. ■ MAKE CLEANING EASY
Design the cage with removable trays or easy access for daily cleaning.

6. ■ SECURE THE CAGE AGAINST PREDATORS

REX RABBIT FACTS

1. Originated in France in 1919 from a genetic mutation in wild gray rabbits.
2. Famous for its short, plush, velvet-like fur, caused by the rex gene.
3. Medium-sized breed, weighing 7.5–10.5 pounds (3.4–4.8 kg).
4. Known for being social, gentle, and good pets, especially with children.
5. Average litter size is 6–8 kits, with a gestation period of about 31 days.

Red VS Black Tort. Both of these are nonextension colors (ee) but Torts are self based (aa) Reds are Agouti (A-) with paler inner ears, eye circles, often paler belly. Though preference for many breeds is for a red belly which is not easy to breed for but absolutely stunning. Wideband, high Rufus and a variety of modifiers go into making a good Red. (The pictured red is not a "good" one, but completely showable)

Note that neither color has ring color.

Commonly confused dilute colors!

It's even easier to get confused if the blue is less intense. Blue can range from very deep rich blue to much paler and still be genetically blue. OR if the Opal have pale under color which is a common fault, or muddy rings.

Agouti Colors! These were 8-10 week old kits.

Ear Tips are very helpful in Agouti colors for determining if it's a Black, Blue, Chocolate or Lilac based color.

Opals are the dilute of Castor, Lynx is the Dilute of Amber.
