The 2027 Halliday W**e Companion Awards have been released, and we are thrilled to share outstanding success across the Leconfield W**es portfolio of current vintage w**es. Here's what the reviewing team had to say:
Leconfield Coonawarra Reserve Cabernets 2022 - 96 Points
"67/20/13% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc. Co-fermented for 14 days on skins; matured for 27 months in 33% new Taransaud French oak hogsheads. This is in a very comfortable place, with black and red berries intertw**ed and toasty oak relaxing the w**e and providing mocha, clove and cassia spice. It is chewy for its tannins, but with a seductive ribbon of soft, yielding fruit that carries it through to the finish. An excellent modern expression of Coonawarra's historical roots." Shanteh Wale
Leconfield Coonawarra Sydney Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 - 95 Points
"The bottling honours w**e industry legend and Leconfield founder, Sydney Hamilton. Primary fermentation in new French oak, matured in three-year-old French oak hogsheads for seven months and two years in bottle. Compact in cassis and Ribena without any artificial high tones. Tonka beans, medjool dates and fig skin propped up with boot polish, graphite and licorice straps. Tannins ebb and flow, but the density of bright fruit is the star." Shanteh Wale
Leconfield Coonawarra DGR Cabernet Shiraz 2022 - 95 Points
"Sydney Hamilton’s dedication to making ‘Damn Good Red’ is here in the bottle. The colour is a youthful crimson with dark cherries, boysenberries and cassis, some clove and cinnamon dust. Acidity is perky and livens the middle palate. Tannins are powerfully situated at the base and will provide a long life ahead in the cellar. Its cohesiveness and drinkability on release have clearly been considered. A w**e of wisdom and passion." Shanteh Wale
Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot 2022 - 95 Points
"This comes from Leconfield's mature merlot vines planted as far back as 1982 but, interestingly, is then supported by newer clones. First up, this is a merlot of both distinction and pedigree. Its perfume, which boasts red rose and potpourri florals, is then bolstered by concentrated, ripe, plummy fruit with such fine, silty tannins. The w**e is full and plump with sinewy structure. It has drinkability in youth but will age beautifully over the next decade. Stunning." Shanteh Wale
Lonicera by Leconfield 2023 - 94 Points
"Made in a medium-bodied, dry-red style, this blends merlot and cabernet franc into a perfumed concoction of plum, quince paste and candied cherries. While the plushness of merlot sits comfortably in the middle palate, this is astonishingly crunchy and fine. Harvested in the cool of the night, the ripe red fruit and sandy, powdery tannins are spot on. Acidity pulls and stretches out the edges. If you are after a pretty but graceful red w**e, then this is a welcome treat. Impressive at the price." Shanteh Wale
Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc 2024 - 93 Points
"A witches' brew of mulberry, blackcurrant and poppy seed. Some pepperberries, juniper root and licorice. Magnolia, crushed cardamom and coal. Paul Gordon has a deft hand in encouraging the soul of the variety and all its quirks whilst making a w**e of elegance and ageability. Fruit is hero’ed, and oak provides a harmonious chorus." Shanteh Wale
Leconfield McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 - 93 Points
"From black loam over clay soils, south of the town of McLaren Vale, all French oak, 23% new. There’s a suaveness of feel here, tannins sleek, rounded, the palate supple and harmonious, yet with lineal intent. The flavours run deep, expressive of those clay soils, but there’s nothing ponderous here. Black plum, dark berries, ground anise, worn leather, vanilla bean, cloves, allspice and cacao nibs. This delivers plenty, especially for the sticker price, both in terms of intensity and a modicum of refinement." Marcus Ellis
Leconfield Coonawarra Riesling 2025 - 93 Points
"This is a festival of citrus, lemon myrtle, pomelo and pith. Some Granny Smith apple and kiwi. A river of fresh acidity, some lemon cream and a shortbread-like grainy texture. It's a bright and vivid w**e with additive drinkability; this will age well, too, showing more of its lemon oil over time. A dry finish, but with fruit echoing on." Shanteh Wale
Congratulation to all other w**eries who also achieved great results.
