🍷HOW DID ROUGE HOMME GET ITS NAME?
There's a funny tale about how Rouge Homme came to be. At first, the label was going to declare simply Redman Claret. But the Redman’s were discouraged. With the dominance of France and all things French being seen as the epitome of sophistication in the world of wine at the time, the name ‘Redman’ was deemed too ‘ordinary’ by the designer of Bill and Owen’s wine label.

The family considered several names including Namder (Redman spelt backwards).

It was Don and Joy Redman (Owen’s brother and sister-in-law) who came up with the name Rouge Homme. They had purchased a French dictionary, and the name was literally translated to mean ‘Red Man’, although it was not until the label was printed that French speakers informed the family that the correct French was Homme de Rouge, but by then it was too late!

The family prepared an advertising campaign to promote their wine, but it was never needed. Six months after they bottled the first Rouge Homme, it had been sold for 42/- a dozen. Sales soared every season.

THE ROUGE HOMME STORY
First bottled in 1952, the Rouge Homme label grew an Australian and international following for its distinctive Coonawarra wines, including a Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend and clarets.

In 1965, the winery, label and vineyard acreage were purchased by Lindeman’s which continued to market and sell wine under the Rouge Homme brand, eventually forming part of TWE in 2011.

Owen Redman launched Redman Wines in 1966, with a vision to continue championing Coonawarra Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

ROUGE HOMME RETURNS AFTER 60 YEARS
Rouge Homme was officially handed over from Treasury Wine Estates at a lunch at the historic Wynns Coonawarra Estate, the place where Bill Redman first produced wine.

A particularly special moment in the 60th year of Redman Wines. Our family intends to make a small premium release of Rouge Homme in future, in keeping with its award-winning history.

At a small but intimate lunch involving the Redman family, previous winemakers Paul Gordon and Greg Clayfield along with members of the Wynns winemaking and viticultural team, there was much to celebrate about the long and storied history of Rouge Homme.

Bruce Redman noted the childhood memories associated with the brand “It’s really exciting for me personally because I was about 11 years old when the family sold the business. I’d already decided I wanted to be a winemaker because I used to go to the Rouge Homme cellar during vintage. The purchase of the brand back in the 60th year of Redman is particularly special.”

The sale of Rouge Homme back to Redman Wines includes a small quantity of back-vintage wine which we will release with first access to our mailing list. Be sure to sign up to our newsletter to be the first to know about these special wine releases.

FULL CIRCLE FOR COONAWARRA ICON: Rouge Homme returns to Redman Wines after 60 years

In the 60th year of Redman Wines, it was fitting to welcome the Rouge Homme brand back into the family. Today we announce the return of this Coonawarra icon with the Redman family purchasing it back from Treasury Wine Estates.

Redman Wines co-owner and fourth-generation winemaker Dan Redman said he was delighted to have the label back in the family’s brand portfolio: “Rouge Homme has a special place in the heart of Coonawarra. Welcoming it back in the 60th year of Redman Wines is especially meaningful - a full-circle moment. We’re often asked about the connection of Rouge Homme with Redman, with many wine drinkers enjoying the wines that were made in the 50s and 60s. The label is synonymous with the Redman family and we’re proud to take it into the future.”

The brand, started by Owen Redman in 1952 is part of the fabric of Coonawarra Wine Region. Early show success with the medium-bodied claret styled wines helped put Coonawarra on the Australian wine map.

2022 The Redman Release

We’re proud to unveil the next vintage of our flagship wine, the 2022 The Redman.

It will drink beautifully now, but equally one to put down for future enjoyment.

Here’s what Wine Pilot had to say:

“Impenetrable deep ruby colour. Beautifully refined and understated, yet with an underlying powerful core of fruit that sits in the back seat right now. Blackberry, fruit pastilles, gravel and cedar with a measured and balanced backbone of oak.

Flavours are more leafy yet retain the underlying power and density of fruit in a mid-weight and harmonious style. Sinewy tannins providing the base to a lengthy and youthful finish. A wine built for ageing and to enjoy over the medium to long term. Drink 2030–2050
