THE THREE STOOGES DINNER

For one night only, Redman is coming together with Raidis Estate and Patrick of Coonawarraa for a dinner that proves great wine is even better when shared with a few mates, plenty of banter and a long table full of good company.

Guests will enjoy a three-course winter feast, thoughtfully paired with a selection of wines from each winery, while the winemakers share the stories, personalities, and moments behind the bottles along the way.

Expect bold reds, generous pours, plenty of laughs and the kind of lively conversation that only happens when a few Coonawarra winemakers get together..

Three wineries. Three personalities. One very entertaining long table - held at Raidis Estate (Coonawarra Wine Region) on Saturday 11 July.

OWEN REDMAN’S STORY
Well known and loved by many, Owen joined his father Bill Redman in the winery in 1937, launching the Redman brand in 1966.

Owen’s passion for Coonawarra was known to all that met him, as well as his drive for crafting shiraz and cabernet sauvignon to put Redman on the map. Owen continued making wine until his retirement in 1982, when his sons Bruce and Mal joined the family business.

Owen left a legacy. He is remembered as a gentleman of Coonawarra who was loved and respected by all who knew him.

Owen’s son Bruce tells the story.

Woodley’s St Adele was one of the wines that put Coonawarra on the map and sparked recognition of the Redman family ambitions. Prior to 1947, the Redman family had never entered a wine show, but it was the St Adele claret that won first prize in the Adelaide wine show (even if there were only seven entries!) which changed the fortunes.

Rudi Buring, brother of Leo, and one of the best-known names in wine introduced a young Owen Redman to the other judges and many professional relationships were formed. From that first entry, not a year went by without a Redman wine winning in a show. The Redman’s continued winning prizes, with the St Adele labels now bearing the name Coonawarra.

Dan Redman and fellow Coonawarra Wine Region vignerons have been in Brisbane this week as part of the Deeper than the Dirt Tutorial for trade and media, supported by SA Wine Industry Association.

Hosted by Sarah Andrew, alongside Ben Harris from Wynns Coonawarra, Matilda Innes Ottelia and Maddie Le Mire Balnaves of Coonawarra, guests were encouraged to explore more about Coonawarra than the terra rossa soil.

The event was also held in Adelaide last week, where the 1971 Redman Claret kicked off the blind tasting alongside 15 other wines to showcase the past, present and future of our region.

Coonawarra is undoubtedly famous for our Cabernet Sauvignon, but there’s so much more to discover. Here are a few facts that you may not have known:

🍷 The name Coonawarra is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning honeysuckle
🍷 Coonawarra is a tight-knit community – there are 135 people in the town (last census) and we very much work together.
🍷 Coonawarra is tiny – making up 2.3% of the National Australian Vintage Crush (2025)
🍷 Whilst Coonawarra is relatively flat, there are distinct differences within the geographic area that mean there are nuances in the wines
🍷 We are a cool climate region – people forget about the Southern Ocean being 80km away. The average daily temperature is 18.8degrees whilst the average daily winter temp is 9.8 degrees
🍷We’re testing different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon in the region – making sure we’re climate-proof and thinking about the future.
🍷 Coonawarra has an eye to sustainability – 87% of the total area under vine are members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

Thanks to all who came along with open minds and a willingness to learn.

🍷HOW DID ROUGE HOMME GET ITS NAME?
There's a funny tale about how Rouge Homme came to be. At first, the label was going to declare simply Redman Claret. But the Redman’s were discouraged. With the dominance of France and all things French being seen as the epitome of sophistication in the world of wine at the time, the name ‘Redman’ was deemed too ‘ordinary’ by the designer of Bill and Owen’s wine label.

The family considered several names including Namder (Redman spelt backwards).

It was Don and Joy Redman (Owen’s brother and sister-in-law) who came up with the name Rouge Homme. They had purchased a French dictionary, and the name was literally translated to mean ‘Red Man’, although it was not until the label was printed that French speakers informed the family that the correct French was Homme de Rouge, but by then it was too late!

The family prepared an advertising campaign to promote their wine, but it was never needed. Six months after they bottled the first Rouge Homme, it had been sold for 42/- a dozen. Sales soared every season.
