🐊💪WORLD CROC DAY🐊💪

Happy world crocodile day to those who celebrate (that should be all of us) 💪🐊👊

While there are 26 (formally recognised) crocodilian species worldwide, the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus) is obviously our favourite.

Here’s just a few reasons why:

- They’re Australia’s apex predator, creating order and balance to the ecosystem
- They’re an unsung conservation success story in Aus- after populations sunk to just a few thousand in the late 60’s and early 70’s, a ban on hunting crocs (and croc farming providing a legal avenue for products) has watched the population grow back to healthier numbers
- They’ve got the hardest bite force on the planet (up to 5000psi)
- Saltwater crocodiles you can see in a while (alligators you can just see later)

Moving a big croc at a croc farm is a little more complicated than opening a gate and mustering them through on horseback… it usually involves a 90 horsepower excavator.

Yesterday afternoon we moved 4.5 metre Brigsy to a new pen just a few hundred metres away, where his girlfriend Bridget will join him in a day or two.

He was caught using the usual top jaw rope, with the sling put under his body to provide support.

Check out these photos from the process 👊💪🐊

Ever wondered why crocs rest with their mouths open?

During the cooler months we regularly see our crocs up on banks with their mouths open to help them regulate their temperature.

Being ectotherms (cold blooded) they rely on external sources to regulate their temperature, like the sun. They can then use their four chambered hearts to shunt warm blood from close to the skin to where it’s needed around their bodies. 🐊💪

🐊🐊Something looks different for today’s Fun Fact Friday🐊🐊

We’ll be changing things up for a few weeks as we ask the team THEIR favourite facts about crocodiles… starting this week, with Adam Lever 👊🐊

Another relatable fact about crocodiles- who else doesn’t want to get out of bed until 9 or 10am in winter? 🥶 🐊
