Kahikatea farm is a small traditional style farm. We breed many heritage breeds of Livestock for milk, egg and meat production.
---Boer Goats - The Boer goat is a breed of goat that was developed in South Africa in the early 1900s for meat production. Their name is derived from the Afrikaans word "boer", meaning farmer. The Boer Goat has great return with minimal input. The Boer goat is a low mai
ntance Breed bred primarily for their meat. Goat meat is lower in fat and cholesterol than lamb, mutton or beef.
---Toggenburg Goats - A breed originating from Switzerland, later improved in England are a breed of Goat for producing large amounts of milk. The Toggenburg goat is considered the oldest breed to have been registered. Our Toggenburg Goats are Registered with the Dairy Goat society of Australia (DGSA) our prefix is Kahikatea. Goat milk is low in Lacrose and considered to be the best type of milk derived from and animal, it is full of vitamins and minerals and is far more nutritious than cows milk, Goat milk is said to be good for people who suffer Astma and Skin allergies or Lacrose intolerance. Goats milk can be used to feed puppies, kittens, lambs, foals, fawns, piglets, native marsupials and mammals, and of course goat kids. - facebook.com/Kahikateatoggenburgdairygoats
--Berkshire pig - The Berkshire is medium-sized and predominantly black in colour, with white on its face, legs, and tip of tail. It has a short dished face with erect ears pointing slightly forward. The breed is used for fresh pork production in England, Japan, North and South America, and other areas worldwide. Such an attractive pig, it is very easy to convince yourself you must have them. What you must know about the Berkshire is that they have a very different way of laying down fat than any other breed. They can be a very fat pig and their meat is also very marbled. They are not a pig suited to the general butcher trade, rather, they are more readily accepted in restaurants and sell well at Farmers Markets. They also have black hair and again that is an issue for the general market. Be prepared to do the hard sell if you decide Berkshires are your pig of choice. You really need to understand this breed to be able grown them well and place them in the market. Like all other black breeds though, you can use a pure white boar over them to produce white piglets and far less of the marbling that occurs in pure Berkshires.
--Dorper Sheep - The Dorper is a relatively new breed of sheep originating from South Africa. These sheep are a great low maintenance sheep, fast growing, drought and heat tolerant and are self shedding (no shearing). Our herd is currently not purebred we are still in the process of breeding up to purebred.
--Purebred Poultry - Currently we breed Malay Game a breed of Game chicken originating from South East Asia. Malay Game are the tallest breed of chicken and have lovely docile temperaments. We also breed the Silkie Chicken - Another breed originating from Asia. Silkie's have a soft fluffy plumage and black skin also they have 5 toes on each feet unlike other chickens which only have 4. Silkie's are very gentle and docile in nature and make excellent children's pets.
--Old English Game bantam
The Old English Game Bantam is one of the oldest strains of poultry breeds that have been used for cockfighting. Through the Middle Ages, the breed was developed and bred by the English Nobility, into many varying colors, traits desirable for cockfighting were chosen by breeders. Cockfighting became illegal in Britain and Australia in the 1850s and English game fowl are usually kept just by poultry enthusiasts. Today the breeds are used at poultry exhibitions and breeders try to develop stock that will win prizes.
