Today we hosted the farm walk for jersey cattle society AGM. Over 100 people turned up to enjoy the beef burgers from one of our own animals and have a look at the cows and farm and have a good ole chin wag! We had a lovely day, but are now very tired indeed after all the tidying and preparations!

On Thursday we had one of the days any pedigree breeder looks forward to most in the year - Classification.
We had 2 classifiers here and by lunchtime they had scored 243 cows, what a day!
Q Gammon Gold was Ex95 again in her 11th lactation, Q Engineer May Blonde became Ex95 in her fifth. The other highlight was Q Viridian Myrna going Ex90 for the 11th time in her 15th Lactation. We had five 94 point cows, 70 excellent cows altogether.
Another highlight was getting five 88 point 2nd calvers!
Don’t forget, all these cows will be on show for you to see on Wednesday August 5th at the jersey AGM and farm walk.

Wow, what a day we had yesterday! We had jersey champion and reserve champion, then interbreed champion with Quintrell Victoroius Cinnamon (pictured with Claire leading), and along with Quintrell Chicago Ida, they won the interbreed pairs too! Ellen won champion intermediate handler, and the new gazebo was big enough to keep both us and the cows in the shade.
Well done to Liskeard Show for providing such magnificent Rosettes!

We are better prepared for this next heatwave with the cows in by day to shelter them from the worst of it.
The graph on the right is from the smaXtec animal care boluses which monitor the cows temperature, rumination and activity from a bolus inside the reticulum. You can see from the thin blue line that the herd average temperature got close to 41 degrees back on June 24th! Luckily no problems with mastitis etc, but what effect on fertility, who knows?
