This past week we’ve been harvesting our Italian pink garlic with some helpers all the way from Italy 🇮🇹 🧄

We are very grateful to get plenty of enquiries from people visiting Australia on working visa’s wanting to help out on our farm about an hour north of Perth.

Farms like ours rely on young travellers like this to help with picking & packing work. It’s not glamorous but it’s rewarding feeling as you pick your way up the paddock.

How to know when your garlic is actually ready to harvest 👇

Many gardening guides say you should wait until a specific number of leaves die back. While that works in a completely pristine, stress-free crop, it is a trap if your garlic has faced any issues like viruses, diseases pest damage, or dry spells.

When a garlic plant gets stressed or diseased, the leaves die back prematurely. If you blindly follow a leaf-count rule on a sick plant, you could end up harvesting way too early, resulting in tiny, immature bulbs that won’t store well.

Instead of looking at the leaves, judge end maturity by the actual bulb in the dirt. First, gently brush away the top couple of centimeters of soil and feel the bulb with your thumb.

An immature bulb feels like a smooth, round ball. A mature bulb is ready when you can clearly feel the individual ridges and bumps of the plump cloves pressing against the tight wrapper.

If you are still unsure, do not guess. Pull and sacrifice a couple of sample bulbs. Dissect the bulbs by cutting them crosswise to examine the clove formation. If the cloves are plump, clearly defined, and tightly packed right up to the central stem, the crop is ready.

If they are still small and surrounded by thick, fleshy layers of skin, they need more time.
Check and dissect the bulb, not the leaves, to get your harvest timing right every time.
