An Algal Bloom update from us at Turners Oyster Farm.
Over the past month in partnership with PIRSA Food Safety, we’ve been closely monitoring water quality as the SA algal bloom has slowly approached Franklin Harbour. Despite our hope that it might pass us by, recent results have confirmed that Brevetoxin is now present. Although the current levels remain below the regulatory threshold, PIRSA Food Safety made the decision this morning to pause all harvesting and sales out of Franklin Harbour, Cowell as a precaution. The health and safety of our customers is, and always will be, our top priority.
This type of bloom is unprecedented in our region. Thankfully, it does not appear to harm oysters, so we’ll continue to care for our stock and maintain the farm while we await the all-clear to resume supply.
While we’re unable to share Cowell oysters with you right now, we encourage you to keep supporting South Australia’s Oyster Industry. Every oyster currently available for sale has undergone rigorous testing and is completely safe to eat.
As we don’t know how long we’ll be closed for, your support, whether through kind words, buying our oysters when we’re open again or simply staying connected, means the world to us.
With gratitude,
Simon, Meagan and the Turners Oyster Farm team, Scott, Brad, Mitch, Renae and Lex
