This post is about whether Golden Circle apple drinks are halal.

They are not, and the maker told us so directly. Kraft Heinz consumer care confirmed it on a call. They do not reply in writing, so what you see is our own record of that call, not a quote. Heinz had already published the reason back in 2014: the clear apple juice is clarified with an agent derived from beef, and alcohol-based flavours are used across the range.

Quiet Room, Chadstone Shopping Centre

Chadstone does not have a prayer room, but it has a Quiet Room you can pray in.

You will find it on the Ground Level in the Fresh Food precinct, at the Car Park E amenities entrance near Woolworths and Starbucks. There is no wudu area, so make wudu in the restrooms next door first. Inside there is a chair, a table and carpet, with room for about three people. The door does not lock and nothing outside shows that someone is inside, so sisters, please keep that in mind.

Hanbaobao and Oh My Burger, Melbourne C*D

Two new halal burger shops have opened one street apart in the city: Hanbaobao on Elizabeth St and Oh My Burger on Swanston St.

Both serve a hand rolled burger, New Orleans grilled chicken, popcorn chicken, wings and the Portuguese egg tart, and they share three sauces: snow cheese, honey mustard and sweet chilli. Only Hanbaobao has the durian and cheese pie. Only Oh My Burger has the black truffle wagyu burger. The cheapest combos were $10.90 and $12.90 when we visited.

Both shops are listed as fully halal on HalalHQ, and we saw the same halal certificates on both walls.

Lilydale chicken, halal certified

29 Lilydale chicken products are halal certified, and Lilydale confirmed it to us directly. We wrote to them and they answered on the record: AFIC is their certifier, their October 2025 halal list is the current one, and nothing goes on it as "halal suitable" unless AFIC has certified it first.

The list covers fresh chicken, schnitzels, tenders, roasts and the whole bird.

Banh with Mi, Moorabbin

A halal banh mi in Melbourne, and you dip it in broth.

A classic banh mi is made with roast pork, crackling and pork liver pate. Banh with Mi rebuilt all three: roast chicken with crisp chicken skin for the crunch, and pate made in house from chicken liver. It is listed as fully halal on HalalHQ.

You build your own (it was $13 when we visited): choose your meat and your broth (smoky signature, Sichuan hotpot or Cambodian curry), then dip the roll straight in. We had the slow cooked brisket and the lemongrass chicken.

Ben Burger, Springvale

Nasi lemak from a food truck at a Springvale petrol station, carried up the road and eaten at the restaurant the same family runs.

Ben Burger is parked in the Astron petrol station at 311 Springvale Road. Choose ayam masak merah (chicken in a sweet, spicy tomato sauce), paru berlado, or plain, with a fried or boiled egg. They are generous with the rice, the ikan bilis and the peanuts, and the sambal is not too hot. Go early on a Saturday: some options had sold out by half past nine when we went.

Warisan Secangkir, the family's restaurant at 282 Springvale Road, has a dining room at the back and a prayer room.
