Southern Stars Vineyard & Winery

Southern Stars Vineyard & Winery Located 15km east of Narrogin WA, Southern Stars is a boutique winery, vineyard and dorper sheep farm owned and operated by Dave & Helen Sivyer.

Southern Stars was born of an idea that it could be possible to produce attractive wine styles from grapes grown in an elevated vineyard in the Upper Great Southern region of Western Australia. This idea gained traction following the "surprising" successes of two Lake Grace vineyards winning much coveted gold medals, and a trophy for best Shiraz, at the Qantas Mt. Barker Wine Show. Our location an

d Lake Grace share a similar high diurnal temperature range. We believed that this element could prolong ripening and therefore produce more complex wine as a result. Our small vineyard is situated on a gentle north-south slope with rows oriented north-south. Our vintage dates are typically mid to late April, typifying the cool climate aspect of our location. At this stage we are producing small quantities of Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. We are in the early stages of expanding the vineyard and have set a production target of 150 - 250 dozen. Our 2014 wines exhibit wide flavour palates, agreeable fruit/acid balance and fine tannins. The future looks terrific!

Some low life, existential being, which I shall refer to as "it" has decided to hack my personal FB page and deny me the ability to post anything, including messages.
"It" has also pirated this Southern Stars page as a proxy for my personal page. How absolutely clever of "it".

However, rather than waste this post with just a whinge, I have something solid for you to get your teeth into.

We are constantly reminded, by those on the colder end of the enlightenment spectrum, that Australian agriculture is a "big polluder" and needs to be reformed and reduce it's "carbon" emissions.
Well, Good News!
Apparently the Ag sector emits, annually, 78.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This includes straight CO2 and adjusted animal emissions.
Here is the good news.
The total Australian grain production from 2023 winter crops ( 5 million tonnes in Qld & NSW) plus the entire 2022-2023 summer crops is 72.3 million tonnes. To produce this quantity of grain Australian farmers have drawn down some 115 million tonnes of atmospheric CO2!
In other words, our farmers have gone well past net zero and are in credit to the tune of 37 million tonnes of CO2 offsets!
I shall further refine the figures to include the unaccounted for carbon in stubble and root mass.
In the meantime, spread these facts far and wide and rejoice in the reality of the pure benefits given to us by our farmers.

Caught up with Dr. Lukas Zwieten at the "Talkin' Soil Health" conference at York today. I first met Lukas at the 2018 conference. He is a Senior Principal Research Scientist with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and an Adjunct Professor at Southern Cross University, as well as being a member of the Soil CRC. The conference was attended by almost 200 farmers, speakers and industry representatives.

Hi to all our loyal Southern Stars mates! Some sad news; we won't be having a vintage in 2021. However, an opportunity awaits for an enterprising entrepreneur! I hope that isn't tautological. We have sub-divided our little bit of paradise and have placed it on the market. The Southern Stars portion includes our beautiful home, vineyard, winery, producer's licence, trade mark , wine-making equipment and 30 acres of beautiful parkland. Details are to be found on both realestate.com.au and domain.com.au If you can't find it , drop me a message here on to my mobile 0418910248. It would be great if one of our friends will take it on.

Cheers,

Dave

To all our dear market customers.
Regrettably, all market events that we normally attend have been cancelled; making access to our wine a little bit difficult.. er hmm..impossible.
However! Should you be suffering SSWS ( that is "Southern Stars Withdrawal Syndrome", not a compass heading!)
we, at SS, are ready and willing to deliver!
All we ask is that orders be in multiples of 6 bottles. Nearby customers in Cuballing, Wickepin, Williams and Narrogin will be served. Customers further afield are encouraged to get in touch so we can finagle a solution.

We humbly await to be of service....hope that wasn't too obsequious🤔 .

Love y'all.

Hi friends of Southern Stars!
Tempus fugits, eh?
Yours truly has been slack as a Sumo's sash (not a nice image), with zero posts for yonks.
I won't make excuses because no one will buy them!
Now then. We are down to the last 5 bottles of our 30 case Autumn Red Rose production. We shall bring them to the Narrogin Farmer's Market next Saturday the 9th. of December , Gnarojin Community Garden at 8 Hale Street, Narrogin.
As these "last in captivity" bottles will no doubt sell, I am giving Friends an opportunity to have one put aside.
To have this happen send me a message and "thy will be done"!

See you then.

Au Bientot!

Merlot madness!
Today is May 20th. All vines have headed down the road to dormancy, as one would expect.
The Merlot is now ready for harvest, having reached the dizzying level of 13.6 deg. Baume and lovely flavours. The photos reveal an interesting mix of pretty good looking fruit and almost leafless vines.
We look forward to tasting the result.
