Donnet's Pasture Raised We are a regenerative organic property in the central west. We grow sheep, cattle and eggs. Our aim is to have nutrient dense food free from chemicals.

We also create compost products like seed dressings and extracts. We are a family run business, aiming to provide the best quality of produce we can.

Here is a paddock of lucerne being prepared to cut for hay.
I was listen to a podcast that talked about the concern farmers had before 1900 about using nitrogen fixing plants as they degraded the soil, where as the farmer talked about growing carbon in the soil with cereals. There is also evidence from trial work that lucerne can use up all the available carbon. So are we in front with more nitrogen but less carbon?

I am assuming without looking, that the goat (Joy) has lice. For the older farmers how often do you treat lice in August? As
I grew up, cattle always got a back line at the end of winter. Is there a connection to vitamin D deficiency and lice? I know that if you feed, or put on the skin, mineral sulfur the lice die on cattle.
It is common across districts to blame neighbours for our lice problems, but are they always there, just in very small numbers waiting for the right conditions to breed? I think this is a worthy spot to do more research. The history books show us that lice spread typhoid in humans. Sunshine was one of the cures which leads me to the question about vitamin D and the fact that stock so often get lice at the end of winter.

For those of you who feel for the goat... We will help her out! :)

A simple multi species pasture that has come up by itself. Alas there are only 6 species here. Board leafs (Forbes) make grass more productive. The drama for many farmers is letting the thistles grow. This will take another thought like roller crimping or slashing or to teach the livestock to eat them which I have done with saffron thistles.

When we put different organic products together we can get some great and lasting results. Bio char will hold more moisture, create homes for microbes, hold or tie up chemicals, feed through mineralization from the burning wood and I am sure much more that I don't know.

There are many ways to apply compost, the trial work doesn't lie. 10-50kgs / ha applied into the soil does work.
