After a few days of well needed rain, the access track is now a bit too soft to get into the current harvest zone

So a bit of free time to work on clearing another section of track with the trusty Joncutter 2500 top handle and the Husqvarna 450

AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS

A contour line of 5 Pasadena Oak (Quercus Engelmannii) trees germinated/planted out from the nursery as seedlings

They’ve been slowly ticking along for the last couple of years - in the last couple of months they have produced some vigorous growth

Aiming to have the hugelkultur contour links between the trees finished by the end of winter so that the tree rings can be removed before the next growth period

The Pasadena Oak is a semi/evergreen tree growing to around 10 metres, the most drought tolerant of oaks and currently classed as of vulnerable status in its native range in the US

RIPARIAN FOREST ZONE

First section of a future riparian forest planned for this creekline flat, now planted out with river she-oaks (Casuarina Cunninghamiana)

A riparian forest adjoins a watercourse and provides an important habitat link between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems

Trees have been planted at 8 metre spacings, with 8 metres between the rows and every second row offset

As a riparian tree, river she-oaks will tolerate periodic waterlogged soil/flood zone. They are an excellent choice as a fast growing screen, windbreak and shade tree. Very beneficial for soil nitrogen fixing and will provide a source of future harvestable timber

It’s been a long time coming - the front entrance area of the property has finally been finished and signage installed

We are now officially ‘Ollerton Hill’

Now that we are more visible to the local community, the timing is appropriate to undergo a business name change that will enable people to better connect with our farming entity, as well as off farm contracting services

As of now, the business is trading as ‘Ollerton Hill Agroforestry’

Thankyou to all of you for your ongoing support - a special mention for the team at Studio 4 - Signs & Design in Goulburn

As the year comes to an end, it’s time for some reflection

As many positives as it has provided, sadly it also comes with a loss

I first met Nick to give him a hand with this tree and everything grew from there

To his family, he is irreplaceable

To me, he was a neighbour, a fellow cutter, a mate and an all around good bloke

So be kind to yourselves, be kind to those around you - everything else is merely small stuff

See you all in 2026
