We trialled some Chomper forage sorghum from AlfaGen seeds this year. Normally we don’t get reliable summer rain for sorghum, but a few hectares felt worth a try—and it paid off. With the late Feb rain and hot weather, it really took off: 9 days to emerge, 14 days to 2-leaf, then rapid growth after that.

At 6kg/ha (~$50/ha), it’s not cheap for summer forage in our environment, but when conditions line up, the feed value is huge. I wouldn’t go big—just small areas. If it works, it goes a long way; if it doesn’t, losses stay manageable.

Key point:
-Ensure sufficient ground cover
-Only sow if confident in summer rain
-Make sure to read up on the variety you plant and how early it can be grazed.
-it has fast regrowth so if soil moisture is available graze hard then remove livestock to get another graze.
-once established it has a big root system to chase moisture.

This season we introduced a line of young ewes, bringing fresh genetics into the flock. With strong meat and wool prices, along with excellent pasture growth from early rains, it presents a great opportunity to maximise returns. The newly purchased ewes have just started lambing, and we’re looking forward to seeing the potential of this new generation come through.

Last week, we sold 199 of these ewes aged five years and older. The ewes were in strong condition, averaging 72 kg live weight and achieving an average carcass weight of just over 30 kg, equating to a dressing percentage of 42%—a solid result for older ewes.

We secured a carcass price of $8.20/kg, along with an average skin value of $26 per head for nearly six months’ wool.

This resulted in an average return of $265 per head, with a top price of $285 per head.

Over the past week, we’ve had Tahlia Braddock spend some time on farm capturing the reality of agricultural life- the hard work, the changing seasons and the every day moments that often go unnoticed or under-appreciated.

I wanted to share a few of these photos that help reflect what life on the land is all about.

Delving 2026 well under way

06/02/2026

Weighing and drafting ewes and lambs pre-joining was carried out using custom draft lists, built from key data stored against each electronic tag. Drafting criteria included age, weight, s*x, breed, and classing, among other parameters.
With this setup, the auto drafter consistently put through 800–900 sheep per hour.

The system seamlessly read tag data, captured live weights, recorded information, and drafted animals simultaneously. Each sheep was processed in approximately four seconds, demonstrating the efficiency and capability of data-driven livestock handling. ❤️❤️🌾🌾 Gallagher Animal ManagementDatamars Livestock AU

The sceptre wheat head featured here comes from a delving project completed in 2025. Sufficient late-season rainfall in 2025 enabled optimal grain fill in these substantial heads. Overall, the delving results were impressive, although some areas had difficulty covering, notable yield improvements were observed across most areas, with some showing increases of up to 1-2 t/ha compared to non-delved areas. Today we received this years hogget side sampling results back. Due to the tough year and drought conditions the micron was a lot lower than normal (I was abit surprised how low the average was) . The results coming back at an average of 14.8 micron. 75 of the samples being bellow 15 micron which falls in to Australia’s Ultra fine wool. Tho these samples don’t give a real good indication of what the actual micron will be in standard years, it gives us an indication of if they are on the higher or lower end of there age group.

This year we received a call from a neighbour saying he has seen some grubs in his barley so we went and had a look at them, and then went on to inspect our own crops fortunately enough we didn’t have numbers big enough to warrant spraying our wheat or barley, and the cold weather/ rain has knocked them about also.

This “grub” is known as a heliothis or native budworm, they grow up to 30-40mm long. They are commonly found in pastures, legume and pulse crops and generally require control measures to be implemented . But can be an issue in wheat and barley crops some years

The photos bellow are some of the worst heads and patches in the neighbours barley but it shows the damage these little buggers can do if they get the chance

This year we had to supplementary feed livestock more than normal which cost us time and $$. It is definitely hard to get the balance right with livestock nutrition. We worked in conjunction with livestock nutritionists/ advisors from, Olsson's Blocks, Compass Feeds, milnefeeds and platinumagservices to come up with a feed mix that met nutrition requirements without the cost being too excessive in the drought.
To also help us better understand nutrition requirements we continued to preg test our ewes like we do every year. This allowed us to tailor nutrition/ feed requirements to each mob.

We used our 3800HD advantagefeeders to feed out the feed mixes prepared. I believe they are next level when it comes to feeder control and supplementary feeding, you can adjust the bottom and top of the lick tray as well as being able to put the adjuster guards in two ways depending on how you want to control the feed output. With being able to feed sheep from as little as 150g/hd/day right through to 1000g/hd/day. I believe these feeders have assisted us in keeping the livestock in the best shape possible, in such trying conditions.
