The boys are enjoying their last week in winter wool ❄️🐑

Next week, weather permitting ofcourse, they’ll be heading through the shed for their annual shearing.

It’s one of our favourite times of year. Not because of the shearing itself but because it gives us another chance to assess the things that matter - soundness, shape, structure and overall balance. (TBH out of all the on farm jobs this farmers daughter does not enjoy her time helping in the shed so I’ll keep reminding myself of the above 😂)

These rams have been quietly doing all the right things and we’re very happy with their progress as we work towards our annual on farm sale on 25th September.

We might have to share some before and after photos once the wool comes off ✂️

The countdown to sale day is well underway!

Sale day is getting closer! 🐑

These few rams are among the draft being prepared for our annual on-farm sale on September 25th. 🗓️

We’re pleased with how their progressing. They’ve continued to develop well, carrying good shape, structural soundness and the balance we aim for throughout our breeding program. The goal has never been to breed sheep that look good for a photo but some of our boys know how to pose well for the shot!

Our goal is to breed rams that will go out and work in commercial flocks, season after season, delivering reliable growth, carcase performance and longevity.

There’s still plenty of work to do before sale day but we’re heading in the right direction!

We’ll be sharing more members of the sale draft over the coming months. What traits are most important in your ram buying decisions?

The lamb crèche is open! ☀️

One of the things we enjoy seeing at lambing is groups of lambs camped together while their mothers head off grazing.

It’s a natural behaviour often referred to as lamb crèche. As lambs become stronger and more confident, ewes can spend more time grazing while still keeping a close eye on where their lambs are. Good maternal sheep strike a balance. They produce enough milk to grow strong lambs, have the instinct to care for them, but also maintain themselves so they can continue raising healthy lambs right through to weaning.

The result is less intervention, stronger lambs and a system that works with nature rather than against it.

Because profitable sheep systems are built one healthy lamb at a time! 🐑

This ewe can count!
She’s not interested in leaving with just one of her lambs. 🐑🐑
On a cold, wet day like today her entire focus is making sure both lambs get up, get a drink and have the best possible start. That’s the kind of maternal instinct we value.
Good sheep don’t just perform on paper. They perform when conditions are less then ideal, when survival matters and when the system needs to look after itself.
Maternal strength, lamb vigour and easy care traits are all part of building a more predictable and profitable flock.

Because every successful lamb starts with a ewe doing her job well! 👏🏼🐑

Most ram decisions don’t show up straight away! 🐑
They show up months later in lambing.
Then again at weaning.
Then again at Sale. 💰
That’s what makes the decision difficult and worth getting right.
Good genetics don’t create noise, they quietly make the system easier to run.

Easter lamb drop, done. 🐰🐑

Over 140 lambs hit the ground across the break - right where they should be, out in the paddock and getting on with it.

What stands out isn’t just the number but how they’ve come through.

Strong lambs, up and going quickly.
Ewes doing their job with minimal interference.
A system that runs quietly when it’s set up right.

Our focus has always been on balanced, practical genetics, the kind that support lamb survival, mothering ability and steady performance without creating extra work.

The Maremmas have been on duty the whole time, holding their ground and doing exactly what they’re there for. 🐕

A good start to the season and a solid foundation for what’s ahead.

Happy Easter!

Even, settled, doing their job.

This is what we’re aiming for.
Not noise. Not extremes.
Just sheep that get on with it quietly and consistently.

When genetics are balanced and fit the system:
🐑 lambs grow at a similar rate
🐑 management stays simple
🐑 pressure stays low
It doesn’t draw attention to itself.
But it shows up where it matters, at lambing, at turn-off and in the overall ease of the operation.

That’s what we focus on at Saber Sheep.
Breeding sheep that work in the paddock, not just on paper.
