THE STORY BEHIND OCEAN BEACH KIOSK
Most of you will know this little space.
For about a year, it’s sat vacant — an empty little kiosk with so much potential, right in one of the most beautiful and iconic spots in our community. Right beside our surf club families, overlooking our beautiful surf beach and sitting in a place that welcomes so many locals and visitors.
It was built with good intentions, but the reality is, it’s a very basic space. There’s limited power — not enough to run a coffee machine — it wasn’t designed for cooking, and the layout isn’t exactly easy to work with.
There are plenty of challenges if you want to turn it into a coffee shop or somewhere that can serve food and hot drinks.
And, like everyone else who had a look at it and did the maths, we knew it was going to be hard. Really hard.
We walked past it every day, just like everyone else, hoping that someone would come along and rescue this little space and bring it to life.
A year went by… and no one did.
Then one morning, a little mistake in an email landed in our inbox. The headline said the kiosk was for sale.
Something sparked inside us.
We suddenly realised that if we didn’t act now, we might lose the opportunity altogether.
So, just out of curiosity, we made an enquiry.
One email turned into another. Then another. A week of emails somehow led us sitting in the CEO’s office at the Shire of Denmark, talking about taking on the kiosk.
And somehow… here we are.
Committed! There’s no going back now. 😂
I remember thinking, “OMG ! I’d better start figuring out how we’re actually going to pull this off!”
Within a couple of days, a plan started to come together — and then the ideas just kept coming.
We’re still working it all out. There are plenty of hurdles ahead, but little by little, things are starting to fall into place.
Our hope is to open Ocean Beach Cafe sometime during the school holidays towards the end of this year.
We ask for a little patience while we work through the challenges and figure out how to make this unique little space work.
What we do know is this:
We want to create something with love, heart and inspiration from this beautiful place we call home.
We want to celebrate our community and support our wonderful Great Southern producers and local suppliers, bringing local produce and our own Asian-inspired flavours into this little corner by the beach.
Because we don’t have the power for a full coffee machine yet, we’ll be doing things a little differently.
…and plenty more ideas brewing behind the scenes.
This little kiosk may have its challenges, but we see so much potential in it.
We see a place where our surf club families can grab something after a morning at the beach, where locals can stop for a bite, where visitors can discover a little taste of our food and culture, and where we can share our love for this beautiful community.
So, for now, watch this space.
We’ll keep you updated as things come together and, when the day finally arrives, we can’t wait to open the doors of Ocean Beach Cafe and welcome you in.
