By now many would’ve heard that ownership of Kalyeeda Station has changed hands and the Camp Family’s time at Kalyeeda has come to an end.
Although I won’t be posting on this page anymore, I’m not quite ready to close it down. The photos and posts serve as a reminder of what a special place Kalyeeda was to us and the memories we shared there.
Mum and I first had the idea to start this page back in 2015. Frustrated by the lack of social media representation in our industry and a false narrative being fed to the public on what actually happens on most Northern Beef cattle stations, we wanted our own platform to tell the Kalyeeda story.
We Camps are a fiercely proud bunch, particularly when it comes to Kalyeeda. When Mum and Dad first bought Kalyeeda in 1995 it was bare of infrastructure and cattle. Over 30 years, Mum and Dad made it into the place it is today. It wasn’t just a family business, it wasn’t even just a home, Kalyeeda was a part of our family. Many a sacrifice was made and there was blood, sweat and tears shed by all of us in the face of keeping Kalyeeda going.
Over those 30 years we had bushfires, floods, the live export ban of 2011, market drops and dry years. We also experienced 3 major illnesses within our family and dealt with all the complications that come from a young, growing family living rurally.
All that said, we also had many great seasons, were privileged to work with some amazing people from all over Australia and the world, and for Hannah, James, Wave and myself, we were lucky to have the kind of upbringing many only dream about.
In 50 years from now, if someone was to ask me where my favourite place in the world is, I know the answer would be this; riding the point on a muster across the Kalyeeda spinifex plains, my three siblings riding alongside me, Dad in the catcher - always knowing what the mob would do well before the mob itself knew - and Mum following on the tail carrying water, sandwiches and zucchini slice. It’s a very simple memory but one that perfectly captures all that I love about Kalyeeda.
Thank you to everyone who has joined us on the journey and those who left their mark on Kalyeeda and our family.
