Open Thursday through to Monday Nestled at the foothills of Red Hill, Trofeo Estate is a family-owned vineyard and winery with a unique story to share. A trip to Trofeo will take you back in time, where the most ancient method dating back more than 3,000 years meets modern innovation in winemaking. Known as the ‘Home of Terracotta Wine,’ Trofeo is one of the largest producers in the Southern hemis
phere to age and ferment wine exclusively in Terracotta Amphora vessels imported from Italy. Elegant and fruit-driven wines are grown and crafted onsite, representing the purest form of each cool climate variety and the regions unique terroir. A Rich Legacy
Trofeo Estate began its life in the 1930s as a bustling passionfruit cannery, reflective of the property’s long-standing connection to local agricultural traditions. After a devastating bushfire in 1967 destroyed the original vines, the estate took on new iterations, including operating as dairy cool stores. It wasn’t until 1998 that the vineyard was revived under new ownership, marking the first modern vine plantings on the Mornington Peninsula. Under the stewardship of Jim and Kathy Manolios, who acquired the property in 2012, the estate has flourished. Combining organic farming practices with innovative viticulture, they have transformed the vineyard into an award-winning destination dedicated to both sustainability and crafting premium wine for the modern connoisseur. A New Era of Winemaking
Jim Manolios, with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biochemistry, brought an intricate understanding of chemistry to winemaking at Trofeo Estate. Driven by a passion for natural and pure wine production, he partnered with the estate's founding winemaker Richard Darby to pioneer the use of modern amphorae (terracotta) for fermentation and maturation. This method eliminates the influence of oak barrels, honouring the natural characteristics of the grape. Wines that are vibrant, true to their terroir, and align with the ancient traditions of winemaking. Today, Trofeo Estate is proudly the largest producer of wines made using terracotta in the Southern Hemisphere, offering a rare and innovative experience for wine enthusiasts. The Vineyard Today
