It’s protea season on the farm. I have progressively planted over 200 proteas over the last couple of years so it’s wonderful to see the proteas finally flowering in larger numbers. Due to the different soil profiles on our farm I have planted them in a variety of locations to see where they grow the best. So far the plants are all growing well, although I have dug copious amounts of suitable native soil deep into the ground where I have planted them which has certainly given the young plants a good start. Probably the biggest threat to them on our farm is the many animals that see the protea plant and their flowers as a tasty meal which includes kangaroos, rabbits, parrots and occasional escapee cows. Just like my expanding collection of dahlias and chrysanthemums I can probably now add proteas and other natives to my addictive collections. There are so many types of proteas that all have beautiful long lasting flowers which I aim to regularly share with the local community in the fresh flower bouquets I make each week.

Thank you to everyone who ordered Karri Gold Flowers for Mother’s Day and apologies for anyone who missed out. The last of the Mother’s Day flower orders have just been delivered and I have now completely sold out of flowers. Time to let the garden recover and I am looking forward to putting my feet up for the rest of the day.

It’s the end of dahlia flowering season on the farm. The dahlias have been really beautiful this year but it’s time to cut them back and let their tubers develop a little bit more before digging them up, diving the clumps and storing the tubers ready for next season.

The Dexters have 4 paddocks to graze in but they are always lined up along the back fence when I’m in the flower patch waiting in anticipation of any weeds that might be thrown over the fence.
