It’s my first spring on the farm and the days are long, I’m busy planting, weeding, mulching and planting.

This is my most used bit of kit at the moment and I am so grateful that I have my Christmas present from the kids to tow behind.

I’ve got the Indigo Permaculture group coming for a farm tour in 3 weeks so the deadline for getting some of the jobs done is real. I’ll try and get some snaps of the work done some time this week weather permitting.

One of the biggest lessons I've learnt over the years is that if you want a small farm to provide a living, you can't rely on memory.

It's easy to remember what worked this season, but can you remember why it worked? Which seed lot had the best germination? Which bed produced the highest yield? How many bunches of calendula did you actually harvest? How much did it cost to grow? Which workshops filled first? What did people ask for that you didn't have?

Those answers become the difference between gardening and running a profitable farm.

With only a small amount of land, every bed has to earn its place. Every crop has to justify the time, water and effort invested in it. Good record keeping turns observations into decisions and decisions into a more resilient business.

Winter is when I spend time looking back through my records, updating my propagation calendar, reviewing production notes and planning the season ahead. It's probably not the most glamorous job on the farm, but it might just be the most valuable.

The record sheets and planners I use every day are now available through FarmacyCo because they're the tools I genuinely rely on. They've evolved over years of growing, making mistakes, and learning what information is actually worth recording.

If your goal is simply to grow beautiful herbs, you'll still find them useful.

Why did I choose Maillette lavender?

There are hundreds of lavender varieties, but not all of them are created equal.

When you're growing lavender for essential oil, hydrosol, drying, or workshops, the variety you plant matters just as much as how you grow it. After a lot of research, I settled on Maillette as the first hedge to go into the FarmacyCo herb garden.

In this week's video, you'll come along as I collect the plants from the post office, plant the first section of what I hope will become a beautiful and productive lavender hedge, and share why I believe Maillette is one of the best lavenders for a medicinal herb farm.

As always, life on the farm had other plans too... one particularly cheeky magpie decided the chickens deserved some attention!

Winter is often when the real work of farming happens.

Not in the garden beds, but at the kitchen table.

It's the time of year when I sit down with a cup of tea and start reviewing the season coming and whats been. What germinated well? Which crops earned their space? How much calendula did I actually harvest? When did I sow those echinacea seeds? Did the late spring rain affect yields? What needs to be done for next season.

Over the years I've developed a collection of spreadsheets, planning sheets and record-keeping systems to help keep track of what's happening around the farm. They started as simple notes scrapped on broken bits of paper carried in my pocket in the field, they are still there but I have gradually evolved into these tools I use to plan crops, record propagation, track harvests, monitor rainfall, manage inventory and review what worked each season.

I've had a few people ask how I keep track of everything, so I've decided to share the system I use myself.

The Herb Farmer's Management Plan is the collection of planning and record-keeping tools I use at FarmacyCo. It's designed for herb growers, market gardeners and anyone who wants to turn observations into knowledge and make better decisions season after season.

Because the best growing lessons rarely come from a book. They come from paying attention, my menopause brain means I have to write it all down.

Farm is coming together, another bit of kit put up. Hoop house is up ready for propagation, I can get the seeds in for spring planting. It’ll need a re-skin in summer as this cover wont last and it’ll cook the plants without good ventilation.

Tell me your plant memory.

Most of us have one. A grandparent's garden. The smell of tomato leaves on a hot afternoon. Blackberries gathered from a country roadside. A remedy someone made for you when you were sick.

For me its lemon verbena growing by the back door, my grandmother would pick it every day and rub it between her fingers and pop it in her pocket filling the air with the delicious lemon scent that stayed with her all day.

These things stay with us because plants carry stories. Knowledge about food and medicine was once passed neighbour to neighbour, gardener to gardener, generation to generation. Something about that thread feels worth holding onto.

That's what *In The Weeds* is about.

It's where I share what I'm learning as I build a small herb farm in North East Victoria. Seasonal observations, practical growing advice, lessons from the field, and reflections on the relationship between people and plants.

One of the things I love most about plants is that there is always something new to learn.

Whether it's growing herbs, making herbal preparations, creating hydrosols, or exploring the fascinating world of botanical distillation, every plant has a story to tell.

Over the past few years, I've had countless conversations with people wanting to learn more about distillation — not for alcohol, but for creating hydrosols, floral waters and essential oils from the plants growing in their own gardens.

That's what led me to create Alembic Alchemy.

I've just finished a major update of the website, adding new educational resources, articles and guides to help people understand traditional copper stills, botanical distillation and how to get started safely and confidently.

If you've ever been curious about turning lavender into hydrosol, distilling rose petals, or understanding how copper stills work, you'll find plenty to explore.
