Sea urchin micro-barrens are a critical early warning sign of climate-driven ecosystem collapse, and they can be detected well before temperate reefs are lost along south-east Australia’s coast.

In their paper just published in Nature Communications, Assoc Prof Scott Ling and Dr John Keane show results of tracking the poleward progression of urchin barren formation over the past 15 years, and the reef ecosystem collapse that followed.

“Looking towards the equator reveals what to expect as cooler ecosystems progressively warm beyond ecological tipping points, this gives us the chance to act before it’s too late,” Scott said.

Actions already yielding results include a spatially variable harvest-subsidy that proactively directs fishing towards valuable reefs at high risk of urchin overgrazing, as well as increasing the number of rock lobsters that predate on the urchins.

The urchin harvest is now 500 tonnes per year, with subsidies provided by the Abalone Industry Reinvestment Fund (AIRF), a partnership between the State Government and the Tasmanian Abalone Council.

This research is supported through Fisheries Tasmania, FRDC and the Australian Research Council.

FAQ: Is eating sea urchins good for our health?

Of course. Sea urchin contains a high protein content with beta-carotene and many other mineral elements, such as zinc and magnesium. They are beneficial for improving antioxidants, boosting the immune system, and reducing inflammation. Besides, consuming sea urchins will enhance Omega-3 fatty acids which may support our heart and brain health.

We believe that with our continuous effort in 2024 harvesting Long spine Sea Urchin we are contributing to the protection of kelp and seaweed forests. Moreover, in 2024 we want to expand the production of Sea Urchin waste fertiliser and soil conditioners, closing the cycle!

Sustainability is always our responsibility.
