The straw bale warehouse and cellar door are under construction, and their producer wholesaler licence currently limits sales to mail, phone and internet orders. Bob began his winemaking career at Kay Bros, SA while undertaking oenology studies at CSU Wagga Wagga. After returning to NSW, he completed a vintage in the Hunter Valley, and then the family moved to Mudgee where his wife, Julie, was born. They then purchased 50 acres and began planting a small vineyard with a range of grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and Zinfandel. However, since his retirement from teaching, he is following his passion of making his own handcrafted, high quality wines.

We were surprised and honoured to learn recently that the Touriga Nacional Bob first made for Mansfield Wines, using Heslop fruit, was likely the first dry table wine labelled as Touriga Nacional in Australia. Thank you to Young Gun of Wine for highlighting this variety and our role in its history in Australia!

Check out the link below to read the deep dive and find out why we love this variety so much!

In a lot of ways, Touriga is where it all started for Heslop Wines. It was among one of the first varieties Bob and Julie planted when they established the vineyard in 1984. Little did they know just how important this grape would become!
While it's considered an alternate variety in Australia, it's one of the main grapes traditionally used in Portugal for table wines and port. Historically it has been grown in Australia, but it was used mainly for fortified wines. It wouldn't have been widely known back then because as was the practice, the variety usually wasn't written on the label. Instead, they often used names like 'Grandfather Port'. In the 80s when Bob was choosing what to plant, the industry was changing and it was becoming more popular to display the variety.
So the plan was to do something a bit different by using the traditional port varieties to make fortifieds and put the grape front and centre on the label. The funny thing is the first table wine he made with it was so popular he had to keep making it. So after all that, he's never actually made a port with the Touriga!

There's nothing Liam likes more than being interrupted in the middle of winery work. Bit hard to say no to these angelic little faces though 🥰😆

Incredible sunset yesterday 🌞 I think this one tops the lot!
