We have finally welcomed our very first calf for the 2026 season - X1!

A beautiful little heifer calf weighing in at 29kg's & out of a first year Heifer V6, who is a Karoo Realist daughter. X1 is the first of many Uppercut progeny that we will we see in the coming weeks. It always is an exciting time seeing your breeding program come to fruition & what some of these new genetics offer!

Everyone has their own way when it comes to getting organised for the calving season & this is how we do it.

We make a session on the Gallagher TWR 5 & scan the required amount of NLIS tags based on pregnancy scanning numbers. These are pre-assigned to each calf and paired up with their corresponding VID tags. Then we use the barcode scanner as a data input device which is capable of scanning the QR code on each Tissue Sample Unit (no chance of human error). Each sample unit is paired to each calf.

The VID Tag, NLIS Tag and TSU is then placed in a small zip lock bag and fed onto a coat hanger in numerical order. These will then hang up in the buggy in a convenient spot to grab as required.

Having everything preloaded in the system makes it hassle free when tagging a calf out in the elements! 🌦

We know you can buy the packs already made up but this is what works well for us! Hoping everyone has a succesful calving 👌

Hopefully we haven't scared off this weekend's rain, a great opportunity to get some fertiliser on 🤞
We are really greatful with how this Winter has been so far approaching the halfway mark. A few frosts but some beautiful days and 100mm of rain in the last couple of weeks! 🌧 🌱 🐄

Today the next generation of young bulls were shifted onto their winter crop & there has been no complaints from them!

Making the most of today's lovely weather we marked all their fence breaks in. The GPS is a great tool for setting break fences & helps with budgetting on their feed requirements. Each fence is 12 metres & there will be a total of 27 breaks in the whole field. This sort of crop needs flattening to enable you to setup break fences. The crop is Subzero Forage Brassica & Cow Chow Italian, planted with an APV air seeder on a set of speed discs with a pre-spread of 150KG's DAP per hectare!

One of those heifers that always catch your eye! A very feminine 38 Special Daughter with plenty of depth of body & style! 🧬
