🌾 Harvest & Straw Update from P*P 🌾

The barley harvest was completed in December, with baled straw heading off to local dairy farms — a great outcome for our local agricultural sector.

P*P was also pleased to donate a portion of the straw to Finley High School to support their livestock program and the fantastic work they continue to do.

Wheat straw has also been baled at Mick Agosta’s and at Will Robertson’s, with carting into the Beefcorp feedlot still underway.

There has been a tremendous turnout for straw carting over recent months — a real show of community spirit.

A big thank you to our loader drivers Paul Bramley and Josh (Ian Mason), and to the trucks and drivers:
Jeremy Robertson
Julian Brunt
Allan Clarke
Jewell's Truck
Lang's Trucks

Thank you also to those who donated straw and to everyone who generously gave their time and equipment to help cart it.

Well done to all involved, and thank you on behalf of P*P for making this such a success.

Finley Men's Shed Boosts Community Farm with Generous Donation
The Finley Passionate Community Participants (P*P) received a significant boost recently, thanks to a substantial contribution from the Finley Men's Shed. Committee members of the P*P were presented with a donation generated by funds from various items crafted or repaired in the Men's Shed workshop. Remarkably, some of these items were fashioned from materials sourced from the P*P's own community farm, Mandalay. Notably, the popular galvanized iron garden beds were crafted from corrugated iron salvaged from Mandalay's woolshed.

The Finley Men's Shed has long played a crucial role in the community since its establishment around 2011. With approximately 25 members attending on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8 am to 12 noon, the Shed takes pride in its ability to give back to the community, both financially and through various contributions.
President Gavin Butcher highlighted, "We take pride in the number of ways we can give back to the Finley Community, particularly financially. A number of Finley organisations have benefited from our contributions."
Chris Kelly, a board member of Finley P*P, expressed profound gratitude for the Men's Shed's contribution, acknowledging the ongoing support from various community organisations, businesses, and individuals. Chris emphasised the importance of contributions, whether monetary or in-kind, in ensuring the success of the community farm's initiatives. “We have been privileged to receive some very significant donations, not only financial, but water allocations, labour and machinery as well as seed and fertiliser. We have also been nominated as a beneficiary in a few recent estates.”
Providing a farming update, Chris mentioned that rice planted on the share farming property "Kelvinside" is due for harvest in the next few days, while pre-watering has begun at Mandalay in preparation for barley sowing.

For over a century, the Finley Community has been instrumental in enhancing the town through generous donations and bequests, contributing to assets such as the School of Arts, churches, sporting facilities, the War Memorial Obelisk, Memorial Hall, swimming pool and more recently the Nursing Home, and Recreation Reserve improvements.

A bequest in your Will, regardless of the amount, has the power to sustain our farm operations, ensuring a lasting commitment to giving back to our community in the future.

Drawing inspiration from other beneficiary trusts across Australia, our model is based on the principle of both donations and bequests providing capital. This capital, in turn, generates income which can then be directed towards supporting projects and organisations, in alignment with the theme "give where you live."

Sample wording is available on our website and we suggest that you speak to your family and your legal advisor about your wishes.

Last night, we gathered for our Season Wrap Up/Information evening, and it was fantastic to see an excellent turnout with over 60 attendees. We're grateful for the strong commitment and genuine interest shown by numerous organisations, businesses, and individuals in support of our initiative. A special thank you to Murray Hut CWA for providing delightful finger food, ensuring our guests didn't leave hungry. Check out the event photos captured by Kerry Lunn.
