Hello old girl! Our matriarch. She may not be the lead cow, but she certainly supervises and settles the herd.

It's not common to have a cow in a breeding herd who is 16 years old. If we let her, I am sure she would have another!

This week we farewell this majestic old girl.

Born in 2013. She has raised many lovely calves, two of whom are in our breeding herd today.

Earlier this year she lost twins during birth. She then fostered a poddy calf. Then went on to foster a second poddy calf, raising "twins" who adore her.

Her daughters are strong and loving mothers, taking after this big beautiful girl.

Thank you beautiful girl.

Planted a lovely mixed bag of natives today. Mix included trees for koala habitat, fodder plants like old man salt bush, and some bird habitat with callistemons, and some eucalypt varieties for good measure!

To the untrainted eye... this looks like a random pic. To practitioners its a very fancy and complicated electric fence!

600+meters of fencing holding cattle in off the road, off the house, and off my saplings!!! 💚💚💚

It has been an intense week +!

Day 1 - girls were very uncomfortable with the CIDRs inserted, but they settled in.
Day 7 - 7am yours truly gave everyone their injections
Day 8 - 7am again yours truly gave them their next lot of injections as the rain poured down and none of us were very happy at all about the whole thing. Everyone soaked through.
Day 9 - 7.20 am everyone was a little randy and jumping each other.... ah hormones!
Day 9 - noon the lovely Courtney, technician extrodinairre artificially inseminated the girls,
while their calves loaded up on the poddy calves' lunch.

And now we wait... fresh pasture and 2 weeks...

Wish they were a little gentler on small trees and shrubs - I'd give them more access.

Farmers are never happy! If it rains, it bloody pours right now!!!

34.4mm today, 21.6mm on Monday. Doesn't sound like a lot particularly considering the recent events on the East Coast. This is massive for us. Last year we had a total of 631.8mm for the whole year. So this is almost 10% in 1 week.

Add to that, it's late, and now almost too cold for the pasture to grow and make the most of this weather.

Still... won't say no to the rain!
