Dear Soon to Be Chicken People 🐓

We see you. You’ve decided this is your season to join the feathery side of life… but you also want fresh eggs 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰.

Here’s the thing: to have laying hens/pullets now, breeders would have needed to hatch chicks minimum 2–6 months ago and raise them through the cold, rainy, windy, “why do I even live here” season. yep, we’re talking about South Australia. It’s definitely not the ideal time to raise young chooks, and honestly, not many breeders enjoy it either.

But here’s the plot twist : chicks come from eggs.
And heritage hens (except pullets; basically teenage chickens still figuring out life or commercial breeds created to lay) take one look at late autumn and winter and say,

“Nah, I've done enough during breeding season I am on Annual leave. See you in spring.”

So… even if breeders "decided" to raise chicks during miserable winter, there are not many hatchable eggs → no chicks to grow → therefore no hens in the market now - unless you’re talking about the breeders kept for themselves. Sure, one kidney for a hen please. 😂

Most breeders are just firing up the incubators now ; little chicken seeds in their shells. It takes 3 weeks to hatch, 6 weeks in a brooder and possibly another few weeks to confirm s*x 100% ...so you’ll see more pullets(still far from laying) hitting the market in a few months.

Moral of the story: chicken math starts with the seasons, not your calendar. 🫶🏼
P.S. Posting this so we can just forward it to the endless “Do you have laying hens for sale?” & “Would you sell one of your **** hens?” messages we’ve been getting lately. ☺️
