Headed our way? Make sure you stop in friendly Forsayth along the way. The Goldfields Hotel is open 7 days for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with cold drinks and plenty of country hospitality. While you’re there, check out the local history displays, take a look at some of the beautiful agates from the region, or head out to Charleston Dam for fishing and birdlife. There’s plenty to discover before or after your Cobbold Gorge adventure.

Wildlife Wednesday. Introducing the Australian brush-turkey (Alectura lathami), the ultimate ecosystem engineers. During breeding season, the male builds a giant mound of leaf litter, then carefully manages the temperature at around 33–35°C while females visit, inspect his handiwork and lay their eggs. Once hatched, the chicks dig themselves out, fully feathered and ready to run, with no help from Mum or Dad. Talk about independent!

Wildlife Wednesday. Ever seen a bird that looks like it can walk on water? Introducing the Comb-crested Jacana (Irediparra gallinacea), also known as the “Jesus bird” or “lily trotter”. Thanks to its ridiculously long toes, which can be longer than the bird’s body width, this clever little bird spreads its weight across lily pads and floating vegetation, letting it skip across the surface without sinking. Keep an eye out for them at Cobbold Gorge and the dam at Cobbold Village.
