2018. That number on the label isn't for decoration.

It's the year the record-breaking November frost came, and took out most of the region with it. It was one of the most devastating events Frankland River had ever seen.

It's also the year that the few vines that miraculously held on through the chill, delivered something quietly extraordinary.

Every vintage is a record of a specific year on a specific piece of land. The losses, the decisions, the things that surprised us.

Something is changing.

The mornings are still cold, but there's a different quality to the light now. The days are stretching, slowly. And out in the vineyard, the buds are beginning to break.

Bud burst is one of the most hopeful things in winemaking. After months of bare canes and frozen ground, the vine decides it's time. No announcement. No fanfare. Just a small green point pushing through the wood.

Hello, Gewurztraminer.

In the glass: pale gold, clear and bright. Already fragrant before it reaches your nose.

On the nose: lychee, rose petal, ripe stone fruit — and underneath it all, a quiet hint of ginger spice.

On the palate: mango, passionfruit, honeysuckle. Medium-bodied, luscious, with crisp acidity keeping everything in balance. A subtle spice runs through the finish, and then — a touch of almond at the very end.

Some aged cheddar, a wedge of something a bit crumbly, a few walnuts, a little quince paste. Nothing fussy.

The second learned which blocks ripened earliest, which slopes held frost longest, which rows needed watching in a dry year.

Hello, Tempranillo.

In the glass: ruby red with a warm, garnet edge. Clear and bright.

On the nose: dried cherry, a hint of to***co, and something earthy — like turned soil after rain.

On the palate: medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a savoury finish that lingers. Not a wine that shouts. One that stays with you.

Tempranillo is a Spanish variety that found its footing in Frankland River and never looked back. It suits this land. The cool nights, the gravelly soil, the unhurried pace.

Frankland River sits at the southern edge of Western Australia, where cold nights slow everything down.

The soil here is gravelly loam over clay. It holds just enough moisture to keep the vines honest, but not so much that they get lazy. The roots go deep. They have to.

That's not a winemaking decision. That's geography doing its job.

When you taste a Three Elms wine, you're tasting this specific piece of land — the frost, the granite, the long dry summers. We didn't choose Frankland River for convenience. We chose it because nowhere else tastes quite like this.
