The future of artificial intelligence is here, and the OGGs officially became part of the conversation last week. The OGG Business Breakfast brought together an incredibly diverse light blue audience at the RACV Club in Melbourne on Wednesday 17 June that included OGGs, current students, and past and current parents.

Whether guests arrived as industry experts or absolute beginners, panellists David Bowser (Fr'90) Chair of Geelong Grammar School Council and CEO of Curio Group, Imogen Smith-Waters (He'10) OGG Committee Member and Privacy, Cyber Security & Online Safety Lawyer at Atlassian, and Marcus Woodhouse (FB'94) Head of Clients at Innovior, delivered insights that resonated across all levels of AI literacy.

The discussion framed this current technological shift as a massive pivotal moment in history, akin to the arrival of the internet or the smartphone, emphasising that society is only at the very beginning of this journey. Key themes explored included the evolution of the technology through the three waves of AI, alongside the vital concept of maintaining a "human in the loop" to manage risk and navigate the evolving landscape responsibly.

The engagement extended well beyond the panel. Following valuable networking and a seated breakfast, Nick Ashton (P'99) moderated a Q&A, with insightful questions delivered both live on the microphone and via Slido. Notably, current students impressed the room by challenging the panel with questions regarding the intersection of AI and quantum computing.

Thank you to the exceptional panellists and to everyone in the GGS community who participated in this engaging event.

Franc Tétaz (A'88) was nominated for Best Original Soundtrack at the 2025 ARIA Music Awards for The Surfer, a 2024 psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage that premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Franc composed the film's original score, which captures the protagonist's nostalgia for his childhood beach, his underlying melancholy, and the unique atmosphere of the place itself. "François Tétaz's terrific score carries strains of Morricone in its mythic propulsion," America's Paste Magazine enthused.

Franc won the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA)/Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC) award for Film Score of the Year for Wolf Creek in 2006. He scored Luke Doolan's short film Miracle Fish, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2010, and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year at the 55th annual Grammy Awards for 'Somebody That I Used to Know' (Gotye, featuring Kimbra) in 2013. More recently, Franc produced tracks and contributed to the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann's 2022 Elvis film, including the 'Power of My Love' duet with Jack White and Elvis Presley.

The Geelong Cats have announced Nina Morrison (A'18) will be Co-Captain for the 2026 Season.

Nina was drafted at pick No. 1 ahead of the Cat's inaugural season, and served as Vice-Captain since 2022. Her appointment as Co-Captain follows consecutive standout seasons in the blue and white.

Claiming the Club’s 2024 best and fairest and finishing runner-up in 2025, last year marked the fourth consecutive podium finish for Nina in Geelong’s AFLW best and fairest. Nina averaged 20.3 disposals and 2.7 clearances per game across the 2025 season, building on the form that saw her named in the All-Australian squad in 2024.

“It’s such an honour to lead this group and to represent this Club," Nina said. "There is a real freshness and energy about the group right now, and I’m excited to keep building that sense of belief for the year ahead alongside Becky [Webster, Co-Captain]”.

Congratulations to Zoe Young (Ga'95) on being named a finalist in this year’s Archibald Prize, and to Marta Dusseldorp (Cl’90), whose portrait by Amanda Davies was also selected as a finalist.

Zoe’s sitter this year, actress Phoebe Tonkin, was chosen by her daughter Lucy. “She knew her as Cleo from the Network Ten fantasy series H2O, while I knew her as Frankie in the Netflix miniseries Boy Swallows Universe, in which she gave an unforgettable performance. I’m interested in the crossover between our crafts – how an actor builds a character, and how that mirrors the process of painting a portrait.” Reflecting on the process of preparing an Archibald entry, Zoe added, “Painting is a solo sport, so each year I welcome the Archibald as a reason to step outside myself.”

For her portrait of Marta, Amanda chose her subject because, “I admire her commitment to the arts in Tasmania,” says the Premaydena, Lutruwita/Tasmania-based artist. “She is a determined risk-taker, and I perceive a sense of vulnerability about her. We have worked together on various theatrical projects, where she has pushed for the inclusion of paintings, which I love.”

Zoe, whose practice focuses on still life, portraiture and abstraction, has now been an Archibald finalist on five previous occasions.

The Archibald finalists and winners will be on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until 16 August 2026.

The Old Geelong Grammarians Committee meets six times each year, including the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in May. The Committee represents more than 15,000 Life Members and Honorary Life Members of the Old Geelong Grammarians Association (OGGA).

The objectives of the OGGA are to promote the welfare of the School, and unite former students of GGS, Glamorgan, The Hermitage and Clyde School.

Earlier this month, the Committee met at the Toorak Campus, marking the first meeting for new Committee Members Georgie Browne (A’17), Lulu Morton (Cl’19), Will Reed (P’05), Janet Ryle (Bone, Fr'77) and Imogen Smith-Waters (He’10), who were appointed at the AGM. Janet also serves as The Hermitage Old Girls' Association (HOGA) representative on the Committee, and Georgie is both an OGG and a GGS staff member. If you are attending the Business Breakfast on Wednesday, you may also recognise Imogen as one of the expert panellists.

On Monday 4 May, nine OGGs took to the fairways of the Metropolitan Golf Club for the annual APS Golf Day.

Representing GGS were Tim Whitney (M'80), Sam McCardel (M'81), Ben Grodski (FB'91), Jimmy Legoe (M'97), Tim Bayles (FB'99), Mark Leslie (M'99), Dane McNeill (A'02), Harry Smiles (FB'02), and Sam Bayles.

While conditions were fair early on, the wind picked up as the morning progressed, presenting a challenge for the golfers. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be GGS' day on the leaderboard, finishing eighth out of the 11 APS schools, with St Kevin's claiming the title.

Congratulations to Mark Leslie, who led the scoring for GGS with a par score of 2 down.

Thank you to all the OGGs who represented the School.

If some friendly competition with other APS alumni appeals to you, and you would like to be notified of details for future APS Golf Days, please register your interest with the Alumni Office at [email protected].

Bea Conroy (A’20) has won the Egmont Honey Pro in Taranaki, New Zealand, securing her place on the World Surf League World Longboard Tour for the first time.

After four years competing on the World Longboard Tour Qualifying Series — building on a strong foundation in local and state-level events — the multiple-time Victorian Open Women’s Longboard champion now steps onto the world stage full-time.

Bea previously sampled life on tour with a wildcard appearance at the 2025 Bells Beach Longboard Classic. “I am over the moon,” Bea said. “The experience at Bells Beach last year as a wildcard was amazing. I felt so welcomed by the surfers on tour and decided I wanted to join them.”

After falling to rankings leader Luana Matthies in round two, Bea needed nothing less than a win in New Zealand to secure qualification. Entering the event ranked seventh among the Australian qualifiers, her chances appeared slim, but a standout performance saw her achieve a long-held goal.

Bea posted the highest score of the women’s event in her semi-final win over Hannah Kohn, recording a 14.33 heat total, including an excellent 7.83 single-wave score.

“My chances were pretty low going in at number seven, so I took the pressure off and went heat by heat,” she said. “Being welcomed by the Taranaki community was lovely — I was just super happy to be there. The vibe on the beach helped me relax and surf to my potential.”

Bea will now balance the demands of the world tour with her university studies. “I am so keen for the tour. With a bit of negotiation with my uni supervisors, I’ll make it work,” she said. “I’m sure surrounding myself with such high-calibre surfers will lift my form. I’m really excited to explore the places the tour will take me.”

Support Bea and follow her tour journey at on Instagram.

For the second year, the Hermitage Old Girls' Association gathered in Melbourne at Kooyong Tennis Club for their annual Autumn Lunch. Thursday 7 May was the coldest day for this time of year in 112 years, yet the Hermitage Old Girls were not deterred. Following a delicious lunch, guests had well and truly warmed up and were ready to sing the school song — both with feeling and in tune! Yet another wonderful HOGA event, celebrating lifelong friendships and cherished traditions.

Members of the light blue community gathered on Friday evening for the privilege of hearing from and recognising two extraordinary OGGs at the biennial Geelong Grammar School (GGS) and Geelong Grammar Foundation (GGF) Dinner.

The event, held at the NGV, was expertly led by Master of Ceremonies and Sir James Darling's grandson, Charlie Sutherland (P'86), and opened with an Acknowledgment of Country by Marlley McNamara (Ga'22).

Dr Phoebe Wynn‑Pope (Fraser, Cl'83) delivered the 12th James R. Darling Memorial Oration. Guests were captivated by insights into her distinguished career spanning more than 25-years as a global humanitarian and human rights leader, reminding those present that "the world worthy of our endeavours won't be bestowed upon us - it is something we must make, one conscious act a time".

The evening concluded with the presentation of the 2026 GGS Medal for Service to Society to Professor Tony Holmes AO (Cu'63). Tony was honoured for his extraordinary, pioneering career in craniofacial and reconstructive surgery, alongside his distinguished service to community as a leader, clinician and educator.

It was a remarkable night, celebrating 50 Years of the GGF, the strength of the light blue community, and our extraordinary alumni.

With thanks to the Chair of Council, David Bowser (Fr'90), Principal Rebecca Cody, and Chair of the GGF, Vanessa Mahon, for hosting.
