I had the pleasure of having a lovely chat today with the Local History Librarian at Nedlands Library while trying to uncover a little more of the story behind our new (very old!) house. 🏠

She kindly sent through this wonderful document, including a beautiful photo of the house before its renovation and extension (and, of course, long before its relocation), along with a photo of its original owner, who called it home for almost his entire—and very long—life.

It's such a special little piece of the house's history, and hopefully there's plenty more to discover. The library is having a deeper look through their archives to see what else they can dig up for us. 📖

And for those wondering, "How on earth were you able to relocate a heritage-listed house?" 😳

When we first looked into the property before purchasing it, it wasn't heritage listed. Had it been, we wouldn't have been able to move it. Interestingly, word on the street (quite literally from the neighbours on moving day!) is that previous owners—who were, let's just say, locally influential (IYKYK 😉)—had the listing removed to allow for the extension, and it was never reinstated afterwards. 🫣

That said, it's only local gossip, and we honestly don't know the true story of how that all unfolded. Whatever happened though, we're incredibly grateful everything aligned so this beautiful old house could be given a new lease on life with us in Geraldton.

The "fame" never ends... 🫣

A bit cheeky that about 80% of this news report features our property, yet no one from the news team reached out to us for the facts about our situation 😒

Thankfully, despite what the report may suggest, our project is much further along now (although still not finished) — and that's certainly no thanks to the person at the centre of it all.

The silver lining is that our claim, along with many others, is finally being taken seriously. There are far more people affected than the nine mentioned in the report, and we can only hope this is the beginning of some long-overdue accountability for everyone involved.

To briefly address some of the comments I've seen outside this page: yes, we had a signed contract, payment schedules, and we carried out what we believed was thorough due diligence before committing. As it turns out, so did many of the other affected clients.

Unfortunately, the building industry — and even more so 'house relocation' — has significant gaps in the systems designed to protect both clients and legitimate businesses. That's why stories like this continue to happen. We hope increased awareness leads to meaningful improvements, so fewer families and businesses find themselves in the same position.
