India continues to accelerate its ethanol program, with motorists soon able to choose from a range of higher ethanol blends including E20, E22, E25 and E30 at the pump.

The move follows the introduction of new fuel standards and further investment in retail fuel infrastructure, giving consumers more choice while helping reduce reliance on imported oil.

While nations around the world are expanding ethanol use to strengthen energy security and reduce fuel import dependence, Australia's domestic ethanol industry remains significantly underutilised.

The question is no longer whether ethanol has a role to play in fuel security, it's how quickly countries are prepared to act.

The conversation around fuel rationing in Australia is no longer hypothetical.

Recent headlines and government planning documents have highlighted just how exposed Australia remains to ongoing global fuel supply disruptions — and this issue is far from over.

While emergency fuel shipments may ease immediate pressure, Australia’s fuel security challenge will not be resolved quickly. The conversation around fuel rationing, supply resilience and long-term energy security is likely to continue throughout the rest of 2026.

At the same time, Australian-made ethanol is already being produced here in regional NSW from Australian agricultural products — ready to blend now.

Strengthening local biofuels means strengthening domestic fuel security, regional manufacturing and Australia’s long-term fuel resilience.

A potential ceasefire may ease tensions in the Middle East — but experts warn the worst of Australia’s fuel disruption could still be ahead.

Shipping delays, constrained supply chains and global competition for fuel reserves are expected to continue for months.

As countries around the world scramble to secure supply, increase reserves and manage fuel shortages, Australia remains heavily reliant on imported refined fuels.

Home-grown fuel solutions matter more than ever.

Australian-made ethanol is ready to blend now — supporting regional jobs, local manufacturing and greater fuel security.

Donald Trump says he has “largely negotiated” an end to the war with Iran as part of a deal that would halt hostilities for 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, despite strong concerns within his own party that the bargain could leave Tehran’s Islamic regime in a stronger position.

The momentum behind ethanol continues to grow globally, with the U.S. House recently passing legislation to allow year-round nationwide sales of E15 fuel.

The move has been welcomed as a major step forward for fuel security, consumer fuel choice, and support for domestic agriculture and manufacturing industries.

As countries around the world continue expanding ethanol use, it highlights the growing role renewable fuels can play in strengthening energy resilience and reducing reliance on imported fuels.

For Australia, the conversation around fuel security and home-grown fuel solutions has never been more important. With an established domestic ethanol industry and local feedstocks already being produced at scale, ethanol presents an opportunity to support regional communities, strengthen fuel supply resilience, and keep more of Australia’s energy dollars onshore.

The Renewable Fuels Association today celebrated the passage of HR 1346, the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, and applauded the 218 House members who today voted in favor of allowing year-round, nationwide sales of lower-cost E15. Momentum continues to build for a national ethanol mandate in Australia.

Following a united call from peak agricultural and manufacturing bodies, Bob Katter has thrown his support behind a home-grown biofuels industry — urging the Federal Government to act ahead of the Budget.

After decades of advocacy, the message is clear: Australia cannot afford to remain reliant on imported fuels while exporting the very feedstocks that could strengthen our own fuel security.

As outlined in his press release, a national mandate for ethanol and biodiesel could:
• extend existing fuel supplies and improve resilience
• unlock new value for Australian grain and sugar industries
• support regional jobs and manufacturing
• reduce reliance on volatile global fuel markets

With the potential to supply up to 10% of Australia’s petrol demand from domestic ethanol — alongside biodiesel — the opportunity is immediate and significant.

More than 60 countries have already adopted ethanol-blended fuels as standard.

The question is no longer if — but when Australia will act.

GrainGrowers has issued revised Pre-Budget Asks and is urging the Federal Government to use the May Budget to support growers to continue production in the interest of national food security.

GrainGrowers’ revised budget asks are:
🌾 $50 million over four years for a national, agricultural-industry led approach to support farmer mental health.
🌾 Assess immediate pathways to leverage domestic ethanol production to contribute to short-term fuel supply resilience and reduce import exposure.
🌾 Expedite completion and start-up of the Perdaman Urea project, and support other projects that build Australia’s domestic production of critical agricultural inputs.
🌾 Improve gas supply for east coast urea manufacture.
🌾 Support the use of Australian agricultural feedstocks in low carbon liquid fuels and to underpin grower participation.

CEO Shona Gawel said the current crisis has again demonstrated Australia’s over-reliance on imported fuel and fertiliser.

“We cannot afford to be in this position again the next time we are faced with global supply chain interruptions,” Ms Gawel said.

“Investing now in sovereign capability is an investment in resilience, protecting our economy and our ability to respond when global systems falter.”

For the first time, Australia’s leading agricultural and manufacturing bodies — National Farmers' Federation, Grain Growers Limited, Australian Sugar Manufacturers and CANEGROWERS — have united with a clear message: it’s time for a national ethanol and biodiesel mandate.

Representing more than 150,000 farming businesses and a significant share of regional manufacturing, these organisations are calling for immediate action to strengthen Australia’s fuel security and reduce reliance on imported fuels.

The solution already exists.

Australian-made ethanol and biodiesel offer a practical, ready-now pathway to:
• strengthen fuel security
• support regional jobs and manufacturing
• unlock new value from Australian crops
• keep more of Australia’s energy spend at home

With the right policy settings, we can utilise existing domestic capability, drive new investment, and build a more resilient fuel future.

This is about backing Australian farmers, regional communities, and home-grown solutions.

The time for action is now.

As fuel pressures continue to build, the question is no longer if Australia needs to act — but how?

Robbie Katter MP sets out a clear case for change, highlighting the importance of rebuilding domestic fuel capability and accelerating the adoption of biofuels like ethanol.

At a time when global supply chains remain uncertain, relying on imports alone leaves Australia exposed. Expanding local production offers a practical pathway to improve resilience, support regional economies, and reduce exposure to international volatility.

KAP Leader and member for Traeger Robbie Katter outlines what Queensland and Australia must do to tackle the fuel crisis. This comes in response to the global fuel crisis that has seen petrol and diesel prices skyrocket around the nation. “Things like biofuels mandates, whether it’s in diesel or...

"We are in a bizarre situation right now that we are exporting our feedstocks. And we pay four times the price to actually then use it once it's been refined. It is a completely nonsensical arrangement." — Fraser Thompson, Cyan Ventures

ABC News today digs into Australia's fuel security crisis and Bioenergy Australia's Shahana McKenzie points out that we're not just exporting raw feedstocks. We're exporting finished ethanol and biodiesel "fuels that are at a price point that is cheaper right now than what you can fill up at the tank" — while the country counts down its days of reserves.

Our existing refineries could expand output from 175 million litres to 650 million litres of biofuels using infrastructure already in place. That's an estimated 10 extra days of fuel reserves. Immediately.

The feedstock is here. The refineries are here. The only thing missing is the policy to keep it all onshore.

Australia controls less than 20 per cent of our liquid fuel supply and relies on imports for the other 80-plus per cent we need to keep the nation moving. But proponents of biofuels argue it does not need to be this way.
