Blue Tractor Farm

Blue Tractor Farm Blue Tractor is a regenerative farm, 100 % organic, applying land management practices, achieving long term regeneration and restoration.

I acknowledge I am a custodian of this land. Its sovereignty has never been ceded by the First Nations people. The happy hens at Blue Tractor Farm have a great life living outside scratching for bugs on fresh pasture. These are my gypsy girls, they live in a specially designed trailer for hens. The trailer is moved around the farm so that they are on fresh pasture all the time. The eggs are handp

icked, handpacked and unwashed. They also eat grain to ensure they get all the protein they need on a daily basis. Food safety and animal welfare are the two priorities for Belinda, the owner and manager at the Blue Tractor Farm. Molly and Polly, the two alpacas, live with the hens and help keep them safe from foxes. Farming sustainably is the core value of the farm, it must be good for the land and good for the animal.

It has been a very busy weekend on the farm. It was my equivalent to harvest. I was on a time frame to get the whole farm cut and mowed for Summer as the tractor and mower needed to be returned before the end of the weekend.
So Friday (my day off from my day job) I picked up the mower and after a few other chores including a some laps in the local pool I rushed home to begin the mowing.

There is something rewarding and therapeutic cutting long grass. It’s a good feeling turning messy and wild pasture into short, neat mowed pasture. Although the reason for me not spraying or slashing over Winter is to allow the grasses and pasture to grow as wild as possible so their roots can get deep into the earth and flower for the pollinators. The pasture draws carbon out of the air helping to decarbinise, good for climate change. I love watching the grasses grow over Winter and seeing everything green and lush turn wild over Spring for the birds and bugs and bees. This Winter has been the wettest in about 3-4 years and the pasture has grown lovely and thick.

So, Friday arvo going round and round, up early Saturday and round and round. I stopped and picked up some mulch in the trailer and mulched this Winters 100 trees whilst Steve went round and round for a few hours. Then back on the tractor going round and round after mulching.

Up again Sunday and went round and round again. I enjoyed listening to a cpl of Podcasts on regenerative farming. The guru of Regen Ag Joel Salatin plus a cpl of women in agriculture including Rachael Treasurer who wrote Milking Time. Great book by the way if you havent read it. Listening to the podcasts whilst going round and round mowing pasture reminded me of how amazing Regen ag principles are and the exciting future of food production. All these experiences to enjoy whilst marvelling at the the wonders of the land. When we follow the Regen Ag 5 pillars it is incredible how the land can respond and come alive.

I mow my pasture and grasses and leave it on the ground as it’s a thick layer of lush green pasture that keeps the ground cool over Summer and protects the soil from baking in the long hot Summers we get here. It creates a cool mulch for bugs and worms to live and as the pasture breaks down all the nutrients over Summer and these nutrients go back into the soil, providing food and habitat for important soil biota. This is sometimes referred to as green manuring.

The mulch around the little seedlings I planted in July also got their roots covered with cool mulch to help them get through Summers harsh heat. After cutting about 50 acres of pasture and mulching I finished off my Sunday evening by watering the seedlings I mulched with a nice drink of rainwater mixed with Converte, a plant food full of magic for plants.

My cup is full, my soul is nourished, my body is sore, the pasture is cut, the seedlings are happy and I’m knackered, just the way I like it.
Feeling so lucky to be a landholder and a regenerative Ag one. Spring is here and im on track with the cycles of the seasons and the cycles of land management.

Im ready to start the working week, up early and off to my Sustainability role to do more for Mother Nature.
