We’re down to the last cases of our 2025 Great Western Rosé. With 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion, this delicious dry Rosé is perfect as an aperitif or just enjoyed whilst entertaining friends!

As Jeni Port notes “There’s a synergy between scent and taste in strawberry and summer fruits with a splash of watermelon, all set to the tune of dancing spices.”

What makes Great Western Riesling different to other regions? There’s some exceptional Riesling made in Australia. From the Clare to Eden Valleys and across Australia to Great Southern in Western Australia there’s much to be proud of.

Our Winemaker Jacob discusses what makes Great Western Riesling so distinctive.

We love this old photo of Viv, Hamish and Ben Thomson. There was always much work to be done in a family business, picking grapes after school, feeding the cows, tending to odd jobs! But there has been loads of fun too - whether it was being towed on skis across wet grass in gumboots, or on a skateboard behind a bike around the winery.

In the lead up to Father’s Day, we asked Hamish Thomson what his dad Viv taught him. Here's what he said:

"The value of hard work, and the privilege of growing up in one place with the freedom to try things and figure out how they worked. The value of the land, and a life on it. The honour, the hardships and the intricacies of being part of a multi-generational business.”

"Not how to ride a bike, that was Ben. But Dad taught me to shoot and fish, ride a horse, and drive a car, tractor, forklift, truck, even sail a boat. To appreciate livestock and every type of crop, and what it takes to get them to market. The maths behind spray mixing ratios, land area, volumes. How to deal with trade customers. How to judge a wine."

"And importantly, how to value a customer, that they're a major part of our success, and it's a relationship. We both succeed, or we don't, together."

SOMETHING NEW IS COMING…

A new white wine is weeks away from being unveiled. Our winemakers Dom and Jacob can’t wait for a new wine to join the Best’s family… the news may have been about Riesling over the last few weeks, but something that we used to make has returned given we discovered a special parcel of grapes to play with. What do you think this new addition might be?

Why Great Western for making exceptional Riesling?

Whilst we are often most famous for our Shiraz, Riesling has been grown in the Grampians region since the late 1860s, as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’. From subsequent plantings in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998 Riesling has become a significant part of our range.

A distinctive style, enabled by our cool-climate, they age beautifully but also drink superbly as a young vibrant wine.

HALLIDAY 2027 RIESLING OF THE YEAR

What a night! For the second time, our Foudre Ferment Riesling has been named Halliday Halliday Wine Companion Riesling of the Year!

The 2025 Best’s Foudre Ferment Riesling is a particularly special wine, made in two oak foudres. With 7,500 wines evaluated from 1,030 wineries, we were thrilled to see this special wine score 98 points, the highest scoring Riesling.

Ben Thomson reflects of what this accolade means, particularly in our 160th year.
