Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod

Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod Murray Cod Australia produces premium, farm-grown Aquna Murray Cod. Based in the Riverina, NSW Murray Cod Australia produces premium, pond-grown Murray cod.

Based in the Riverina, New South Wales, our business has a vertically-integrated approach for breeding, growing and supplying what is Australia’s best-tasting freshwater fish. We grow high-quality Murray cod in open ponds (or dams) on the Murray-Darling Basin river system – the fish’s native environment. We believe these ideal conditions make our Murray cod the best on the market; better than fish

farmed in indoor, tank-based systems. With a commercial fishing ban on wild Murray cod, and an increasing appetite for the iconic fish in culinary circles, a group of local irrigators made the bold move to integrate three established aquaculture businesses into one – Murray Cod Australia. By using a land-based aquaculture model, Murray Cod Australia has one of the lowest environmental footprints in the industry. On 30 March 2011, Murray Cod Australia was publicly listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (MCA:ASX).

A huge thank you to Australian Traveller magazine for the beautiful feature on our fish and caviar.

‘Behind every mouth-watering menu is a local producer. AQUNA SUSTAINABLE MURRAY COD is perhaps Griffith's most high-profile export; the brand's caviar and cod has achieved global recognition, even served to the likes of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Impressed by the company's sustainable farming practices, the King requested the cod be sent to Buckingham Palace. Not bad for a fish farm in regional NSW’

This feature appears in the latest issue celebrating the Top 100 Best Aussie Towns, with Griffith NSW, the regional home of where we grow our fish proudly ranked at number 63.

From generational farming roots in western New South Wales to pioneering inland aquaculture, Mat Ryan shares the journey behind Aquna Murray Cod; a story of risk, resilience and rethinking the future of food. After years in the uncertainty of commodity agriculture, Mat made the leap into fish farming, building the business from a single pond in 2010 to one of Australia’s leading sustainable aquaculture operations today. Driven by a passion for innovation, efficiency and producing high-quality food, he reflects on the challenges of farming, the realities of starting from scratch, and the importance of family in building something meaningful.
