Richard Leask ~ champion of regenerative viticulture, Nuffield Scholar, ambassador for the McLaren Vale w**e region, one-half of the brothers Leask and co-owner of Hither & Yon. 🍇
Richard was recently profiled in an interview with Vininspo ~ “Hither & Yon: The path of Leask persistence” where he shared how he got his start in the w**e industry, what he loves about the McLaren Vale region and how Hither & Yon came to be!
“The most impressive thing about Richard Leask might well be his ordinariness. The w**e world loves its myths. We glorify rarity and romanticise the Sisyphean image: the rock, nature; the pinnacle, perfection; and Sisyphus the aloof, maybe cranky, grower. But this story doesn’t centre on a mythical figure; it gathers around the kind of Aussie everyman whose example—by dint of being unexceptional—is eminently followable.” W**e Writer Ed Merrison.
Richard also discusses the Hither & Yon mother site – Sand Road - home to 21 varieties planted across 23 hectares including sun-loving southern Europeans such as Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Touriga Nacional; along with some of the challenges and opportunities of adopting a regenerative agriculture approach in the vineyard. 🍷
This quote from Richard best sums up the Hither & Yon approach about growing and making w**e: “I understand its importance and its ethos, but at the end of the day, w**e is a beverage that should be shared and enjoyed. We try to do it as well as we can, no doubt. But if we get too serious, it puts a lot of people off,” he says. “We’re trying to talk to the newer drinkers with some of these newer varieties and introduce them to things they wouldn't have seen before. So maybe come for a bit of a journey and see where you get to. So, do it to the best of your ability, but don’t lose sight of the fact that it should be fun and don't take yourself too seriously. I think that’s what we're trying to be about.”

Thinking of Ben today....and every day.

Dear Epicurean Friends,

It is with deepest sorrow and regrets that we write to inform you of the passing of Epicurean W**es' owner and founder, Benjamin Hammerschlag on November 4th. Ben's unexpected death has come as a shock to all of us. The Epicurean family extends its sincere condolences to Mary (Ben's mother), his father (Alan), and his sister (Sarah).

Ben devoted nearly two decades of his life to bringing you the best w**es that Australia has to offer.

Ben will be missed greatly, but his legacy of excellence will survive and thrive. Thank you for your past, present, and future confidence in Epicurean.
