From paddocks to the lecture theatre! 🌾🐮🎓

Yesterday, Dr Chelsea was invited to speak with the Adelaide University Veterinary students about her career so far, and what life as a mobile mixed practice vet really looks like! 🩺

From starting out in small animal practice, to owning a small animal veterinary clinic, and now owning Paddocks & Paws Veterinary Services, there's certainly been a few twists and turns along the way!

The chat wasn't just about the animals, the interesting cases or the day-to-day realities of being a vet. It was also about career choices, lessons learnt, finding your passion and redefining what "success" actually looks like ❤️

One of the biggest messages Chelsea hoped to share was that getting to where you want to be in your career isn't always a straight line, and it's perfectly okay to have a few wobbles along the way! 🥰 Sometimes the most rewarding opportunities come from taking a different path to the one you originally planned.

A big thank you to Adelaide University for the invitation, and to the students for their enthusiasm and great questions!

Hopefully a few laughs, some honest insights and a glimpse into the realities of mixed practice helped inspire a few future rural vets! 💚🐾

Spring lambs are here! 🐑 But what happens when mum decides motherhood isn't for her? 🤦‍♀️

It's lambing season, and every so often we come across a ewe who isn't interested in her lamb. Whether she's a first-time mum, had a difficult birth, is unwell, or simply hasn't bonded with her baby, knowing what to do straight away can make all the difference 🍼

So, what should you do if a ewe rejects her lamb? 👇

🐑 1. Don't give up on mum just yet!
Move mum and lamb into a small pen together. Sometimes a little time and patience is all they need to bond. Keep an eye out for kicking, headbutting or refusing to let the lamb feed.

🍼 2. Colostrum is CRITICAL!
Lambs need colostrum within the first 2 hours after birth. Their ability to absorb those important antibodies in the colostrum decreases rapidly after 12 hours. If mum won't allow feeding, you'll need to intervene!

🩺 3. Check WHY she's rejecting it.
Does she have milk? Is her udder painful, swollen or affected by mastitis? Is she exhausted after a difficult lambing? Has she passed the placenta? Sometimes there's a medical reason behind her behaviour.

❤️ 4. Try assisted feeding.
Gently restraining mum so the lamb can suckle may help establish a bond. Make sure the lamb is actually swallowing milk, rather than just mouthing the teat.

🏡 5. Know when to step in.
If mum continues to reject the lamb, you may need to consider fostering onto another ewe or hand-rearing with an appropriate lamb milk replacer.

⚠️ And remember: A cold, weak or lethargic lamb is an emergency. Warm and assess the lamb before attempting to feed, and CALL US ASAP

Spring is one of the busiest (and cutest!) times of year on the farm, but those first few hours of life are incredibly important.

🐾 Happy Vet Nurse Appreciation Day! 🩺

After months of working solo as a mobile vet, I had never been more aware of just how much veterinary nurses contribute to every single moment of every single day! ❤️

From all those day-to-day jobs that somehow just seem to get done, like ordering supplies, cleaning, organising appointments, managing stock, preparing equipment and keeping everything running smoothly... to the incredibly important things they make look so effortless.

Monitoring patients under anaesthetic, performing dental work, imaging, collecting and running blood samples, placing IV catheters, administering medications, providing nursing care to critically ill patients, recognising those subtle changes in a patient's condition, and being there to support owners through some of their hardest moments.

And that's barely scratching the surface!

There is so much skill, knowledge, compassion and hard work that goes into being a great veterinary nurse. They're not just helping the vet! they're highly skilled professionals in their own right 🩺

To all the fabulous veterinary nurses I've had the absolute pleasure of working alongside, learning from, laughing with and, in so many cases, being lucky enough to now call my friends - thank you ❤️

You make our jobs easier, our patients' lives better, and the veterinary industry a much better place.

And if working on my own has taught me anything, it's that a good vet nurse is worth their weight in gold! 🐾💕

Special thankyou today to this familiar face, Nurse Tegan who has been lending a hand at Paddocks & Paws Veterinary Services, helping with patient care, home visits, and basically everything in between! Not only is she a wonderful nurse, but she is such a kind person - and we are so happy to have her around ❤️

Some things just make my vet brain go… 👀

They don’t necessarily mean something serious is going on but they do make me want to ask a few more questions 🤷‍♀️

One of the biggest things I pay attention to is change.

A change in weight.
A change in coat or grooming.
A change in energy levels.
A new cough.
Vomiting that’s becoming more than just every so often.

And I never underestimate when you tell me “I don’t know what it is, but they’re just not quite right.” You know your pet’s normal better than anyone, so that little gut feeling is worth listening to 🐾

You don’t need to know what’s wrong before you call us. Sometimes “they’re just not quite right” is enough 🤎

It must be a sign I’m getting old 😂 but these days, there are so many beautiful old souls I can remember meeting when they were just babies ❤️

The puppy vaccinations. The yearly check-ups. The weird lumps and bumps. The illnesses and injuries. The grey hairs and creaky joints. And eventually, for some, palliative care and those really hard goodbyes.

And that’s one of my favourite things about Paddocks & Paws.... the same vet, every time 🐾

Because continuity of care isn’t just about knowing their medical history. It’s about knowing them. Their quirks, their people, what makes them nervous, what makes them happy, and all the little things you only learn after years of caring for someone.

Getting to be part of their whole story is still one of the very best parts of being a vet 🤍
