I was a bit concerned that I didn’t have a water pump in my 20l bucket, filled with water, when seeping the worm castings to make worm tea. I did agitate the bags in the buckets 3-4 times over 24 hours which seemed to be enough to keep the microbes happy :)

You can’t visibly see the microbes but this is the proof there was enough aeration. White foam from the spout is a good indication.

Since our peony patch is no longer I have been passionately pursuing the regeneration journey. This week a friend’s side garden was vastly depleted of soil goodness so this is how I added goodies to get the soil pumping with life. It’s a beautiful thing and easy to do.

Adding Nutrients to an existing garden bed - No Till Method

After rain is the best time to w**d. Get in and pull those little suckers out. If the w**ds have no flowers or seeds present, spread them over the garden bed as a nitrogen source.

Spread a thin layer of cow manure. (N, P, K). If you can access it from a farm this is gold. Introducing new microbes from another area increases diversity and vitality in the soil.

Make a worm tea with worm castings. Place a couple of cups of worm castings in a hessian sack, tie and place in a bucket of unchlorinated water for 24 hours, agitating the mix several times to release the microbes and all the good diversity the tea will bring into the soil. Will be used tomorrow.

Add a layer of shredded paper. The fine texture allows this carbon source to break down more quickly.
Ideally most paper and cardboard can be used but avoid glossy and heavily inked paper.

The next day mix up the worm tea by diluting 10:1 in a watering can and add to the soil.

Grab a few bales of mulch and spread on top. If you’re not too worried about the look use more shredded paper to keep out the w**ds and hold in the moisture.

Ideally looking to add brown and green layers to the soil. This retains the soil structure and encourages fungi and bacteria activity. For the quickest results everything should be shredded, mulched or cut into small pieces to allow materials to break down quickly.

If you are looking to minimise land fill, shredding paper or cardboard and adding it to a garden bed or compost heap is a cheap and easy way to add to your circular economy.

supplied the shredder for the cardboard.

Peony Rose Grower

The Flower Farm Guyra is a cattle/horticultural farm which fattens beef and supplies peony roses to the Sydney Flemington Markets. We now have a website www.flowerfarmguyra.com.au and sell fresh peonies directly to the public.

We supply peony rose bulbs in June and July and have a selection of bath products based on botanics sourced directly from the farm. They are dried peony petals and lavender flower which we use in our Flower Farm Bath Fizzers, Bath Milk and Bath Salts.
