Something we often take for granted in South Australia is the long line of grape varieties that have made their way to this continent.

They didn’t just arrive as vines. They arrived with people, food, families, memories, and whole ways of gathering around a table.

As our wine culture keeps shifting, shaped by how we eat and drink Italian varieties are feeling more and more at home here.

For us, that’s the exciting bit.

Food pairing doesn’t have to be serious homework.

Sam reckons one of the best ways to learn is to get a few friends together, open a few different wines, cook one dish, and see what happens.

What changes?
What sings?
What absolutely does not work?
And what do you love, even if the “rules” say you shouldn’t?

Because sometimes your favourite match is profoundly different to what’s recommended and honestly, that’s half the fun.

Sunshine, seafood, salt air and Fiano?

Not a bad way to spend a day if you are exploring Cairns.

At Palooka .cairns , the seared scallops with celeriac purée, oyster foam and spring onion brings out the richer side of the wine, showing how textured and food-loving Fiano can be.

What are you reaching for when the temperature drops? 🍷

When the days get cooler, our glasses tend to shift a little too.

Maybe it’s a red with a bit more savoury comfort. Maybe it’s something textural and white with enough weight for roast chicken, creamy pasta, or whatever is bubbling away on the stove.

Winter wine doesn’t have to mean heavy wine.

No standing at a bar pretending you know what 400 wine terms mean!

La Prova cellar door is lounge-style for a reason. Sit down. Take your time. Try five delicious wines. Eat something local. Ask questions, or don’t. We’re very happy either way.

Cellar door open first weekend of the month in Hahndorf.

It’s easy to throw around terms like “food friendly”, but with Sangiovese, it really earns it.

The tannins do the work, cutting through sweet tomato dishes, rich sauces, oily bits, salty bits… all the good stuff.

That’s what makes it such a useful wine on the table. Plenty of flavour, plenty of structure, but without being a big heavy red.

In our books, there is nothing quite like hitting the road in Australia to meet new people and bond over a shared love of wine.

Exploring the stunning landscapes of Queensland is hardly a hardship either!

Our dinner this Thursday night at Palooka in Cairns should be a real highlight .cairns
