Clifford's Honey Farm

Clifford's Honey Farm Clifford’s Honey Farm
Official and only account Clifford’s Honey Farm is one honey producer on Kangaroo
Island.

Dave and Jenny Clifford have been bee keepers since 1965 with the Honey Farm Shop Established in 1993. Kangaroo Island is the world’s oldest bee sanctuary and is home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world. Due to their isolation they have
remained free of the major bee diseases, which infect mainland bees. Bees cannot fly to Kangaroo Island because it is too far, even with strong w

inds to propel them. To protect their genetic purity and disease free status all bees, beehives, used beekeeping equipment, honey, pollen, beeswax or other hive products are restricted from entering KI.

🌸🐝 Ligurian Honey Bee – Kangaroo Island 🐝🌸

There’s something truly special about watching a Ligurian honey bee at work. On Kangaroo Island, our bees are pure Apis mellifera ligustica — known for their gentle temperament, strong work ethic, and beautiful golden colour.

But what fascinates me most is the science behind what you’re seeing in this photo.

A honey bee has two stomachs.

✨ 1. The Honey Stomach (Crop)
This is a specialised storage pouch. When a bee visits a flower, she collects nectar and stores it here — not for herself, but for the hive. Enzymes in the honey stomach begin breaking down complex sugars into simpler ones. By the time she returns home, the nectar has already started transforming into honey.

✨ 2. The Digestive Stomach
This is her true stomach — used for her own nutrition and energy. The bee can control a valve between the two, deciding whether nectar goes toward honey production or toward fuelling her flight muscles.

Incredible, isn’t it?
She is both collector and chemist.

As she flies from flower to flower, she also pollinates — transferring pollen (like the golden grains you can see on her leg) and supporting entire ecosystems.

One tiny bee.
Two stomachs.
Thousands of flowers.
And a hive working in harmony. 💛

Inside the hive, the queen is never alone. 👑🐝

Worker bees feed her, groom her, and care for her constantly. She doesn’t rule by force — she leads through natural harmony, and the colony responds as one.

When the time comes to replace her — through age, illness, or swarming — the workers prepare carefully. They select several young larvae and feed them royal jelly, raising multiple potential queens at once. Each develops inside her own queen cell.

When the first new queen emerges, she seeks out the others. If they are still developing, she will sting through their cells. If two queens emerge together, they fight — and only one survives.

It may seem harsh, but this is how the colony ensures strength and stability. There can only be one laying queen.

This is the brilliance of bees.

And here on Kangaroo Island, it’s even more unique.
Our Rare Ligurian bees have been protected in isolation for over 140 years — the world’s last remaining pure strain. 🍯🌿

✨ If you’d love to experience it for yourself, we warmly invite you to visit us.

🚨 IMPORTANT BIOSECURITY UPDATE FOR TRAVELLERS TO KANGAROO ISLAND
Kangaroo Island is a bee sanctuary, and with new Varroa detections on the mainland, it’s more important than ever to reduce risk.

🧼 Please wash your vehicle before boarding the Sealink ferry.
This helps prevent bees, plant matter, and soil from travelling across to the island.

Here are convenient car-wash locations on the way to Cape Jervis:
✔️ OTR Yankalilla
✔️ OTR Aldinga
✔️ Aldinga Car & Dog Wash
✔️ Christies Beach Car Wash
✔️ Morphett Vale Car Wash
✔️ Seaford Car Wash
(Any car wash before the last 15–20km is ideal.)

🐝 PIRSA has confirmed new Varroa detections in the Limestone Coast & upper Fleurieu, including Taratap and Sellicks Hill. These sites are linked through beekeeper movements, and surveillance is ongoing.

Please stay informed and help protect our island’s pure Ligurian bees.
Thank you for doing your part 💛🐝

🍯 Honey Water & Muscle Recovery 💪

A 2024 study by exercise scientists from Shiraz University (Iran) and Middle East University (Jordan) — published in the international journal Frontiers in Physiology — found that athletes who drank a honey-sweetened beverage before training experienced less muscle soreness and faster recovery after intense exercise.

That’s sweet news for active people everywhere — from gym-goers and runners to farmers, hikers, and sports lovers across Australia and the world. 🌏
Clifford’s pure Kangaroo Island honey offers the same natural carbohydrates and antioxidants used in the study, helping fuel energy and reduce post-workout fatigue.

Try this before your next workout:
➡️ 1–2 tablespoons of Clifford’s honey
➡️ 250 mL warm water
➡️ Optional: squeeze of lemon 🍋

Train sweet. Recover stronger.
