WATTLE REPORT February 2026
Our favourite wattle, accacia victoriae is busy doing its thing here in Hartley and also at Kanmantoo and Callington.
Opportunities for teams of 2 to get involved in harvest coming soon on a share yield basis
For the uneducated wattleseed is a highly nutritious super food that can be stored raw indefinitely. It offers a great opportunity to provide food security for anyone with spare land. We combine it with a selected Old Mans Saltbush to have a secure food base here. It is naturalised to this area however it is slightly south of its usual range.
It also contributes notably to biodiversity which is becoming increasingly important as insect numbers continue to decline world wide. Insects love it and it affords great protection for small birds.
Once established sheep can be allowed to graze amongst it.
Our babies are coming along well with 400 needed here so there are likely to be a number available at cost price for planting anywhere north or east of here. They are not suited for wetter places such as Mt Barker. Assistance negotiable to help establish plantations.
Here at Hartley Rise Estate we have a reasonable amount seeding. They look to be about 3 weeks away from harvesting as does the plantation at Kanmantoo we have secured. Message for more information.
We are also watching closely a plantation on the Bremer at Hartley that is very full of seed. We have been asked to process this after hsrvest so will report back with the yield results soon.
