A Good Day for a Personal Best in the lead up to a Great Month ahead.
We had another good turnout of eight players on Saturday for our first round of Stroke golf of the Hawker Golf Season. It has been great to see so many players on the course and a lot of juniors coming out to develop their golf enjoyment and skills. In great conditions for the game we had some good scores including a personal best, which is always good to see.
Angus McInnis played a personal best round, breaking 80 for the first time at Hawker, coming out with 42 off the stick on the first nine holes, only to fire up on the back nine for 37 shots and a 79 for the day. With his form on the improve Angus is warming up nicely for some more solid rounds this season. Also in great form was Ben DuBois who battled hard on the first nine to stay in contention and likewise built on his efforts with a great back nine, finishing on 76 off the stick for the day. Similarly Mark McAuley overcame some difficulties on the first nine to then better his handicap on the last nine holes for a 92, Nett 78.
After a good day of golf Angus took out the top prize with his stroke score converting to a 65 Nett, Ben coming in second with a Nett 68 and Mark McAuley in third with his Nett 78.
A Big Month Ahead
A big month of golf coming up at Hawker with a little pause in the middle for our local event of the year, the Hawker Races. This Saturday coming we have the first round of the Club Championships and the way the season has started there are quite a few players lining up to be considered in each grade as contenders for the finals. Don’t forget also that we have four rounds of the Club Championships, with the best two scores for each player counting towards qualification for grade finals. Saturday also finishes off with a meal at the Sports Centre with Mark McAuley, Daren O’Neill and Scott Teague catering. Alby Ireland is the Starter on the day and Alby and Simon Hilder are on the scrapes for the day.
Following this on Sunday May 24th players can turn out for a Stableford round, with the Hawker Races to follow on May 30th. Players get straight back into it the next weekend with the second round of the Club Championships with Ben DuBois, Angus McInnis and Adam Gill on the meal roster, Adam Gill is the starter and Adam and Daren O’Neill are on Scrapes. This is followed by a Par round on June 13th. So a big month of golf ahead for players to tidy up their equipment and their games!

Almost Stuck in the Mud!
With a few drops of rain overnight the Hawker Golf Course was in a sticky state as eight players turned out for Saturday’s Stableford round. Players were initially greeted by some extra wind and a bit of rain early in the round after nine holes this developed into a welcome burst of sunlight as the afternoon went on. With strong winds as well, the wet sticky ground in combination made life fun for the players.
In the end the mud also made a monopoly for the winner, as most players battled through to get scores in the 20s for most. Ben DuBois played a consistent game that saw him get 19 points on each nine for a score of 38 points in total. In addition to this his consistent game also resulted in a straight shot on the Nearest the Pin Sixth hole to take away the straight hitter prize. Not getting into too much trouble seemed to be the secret, but this still didn’t stop an errant shot into the creek on the side of the fourth hole.
No stranger for this feat as all players in different places managed to find the thick green cabbage or wardsweed in the rough or in the creek. Getting stuck on the edge and then chipping in in an effort to get across to the third fairway cost Daren O’Neill the second time around, whilst Scott Teague hit a good tee shot on the second, only to see the gentle draw hook with the wind into the rough on the left. Mark McAuley who had the second best score of 33 points, came home with a solid 19 points the second time round, also experienced the wind and the rough, the grief especially coming for most players around the third hole.
Next week’s round will start at 9am as some players are also helping out with Bikes SA visiting Hawker next Saturday. This will be the first of two stroke rounds with the first round of the Club Championship the week after that. In terms of Starters, Scrapes and meals, Ben and Scott are on for scrapes on May 9th, with Ben being the starter. The following week first round of the championship has Mark, Daren and Scott on meals, Alby Ireland the starter, with Alby and Simon Hilder on scrapes. Quick reminder that the week after this (May 24th) is a Sunday round.

A Matter of Adapting
We had another eleven players turn out for Saturdays Par Round where the conditions were warm and a little breeze at times.Fairways were rewarding but players needed to keep an eye when in the rough. It was a challenge for players to cut out the risky shots off fairway and into the creek or pay the penalty.
Angus McInnis was the player who managed to adapt on the tight layout and master his slice at times.Conquering his errors Angus got around the course with a +4 score, which did include some penalties such as his drive on the third which went through the fence, only to be followed by a massive drive up the fairway.
Also playing well for the only other positive score on the day was Mark McAuley, who finished with a +1 for his round, including an unfortunate last three holes that were losses. Daren O’Neill also put in a solid round to recover from early losses to finish square with the card.
The end of the round Angus, Mark and Daren took out the ball prizes, with Ben DuBois taking away the NTP for the best shot on fourth. This Saturday is a Stableford round with Saul Webb the starter and he will be joined by Chris Wenham on scrapes. After this the season moves on with a Stroke round starting at 9am, followed by the first round of the Club Championship.

Opening Round a Big Success
A large field of 13 players greeted the managers of the tees last Saturday as the Hawker Golf Club season commenced with a field of 13 players turning out. After organising groups and collecting memberships players eventually started off in the Stableford round.
The weather was warm and sunny as play started, on a course that presented challenges with its thick rough in places testing accuracy of the tee.
Eventually at the end of the day the winners were closely aligned for points scored. Making a successful start to the new season and continuing his progress from 2025 Angus McInnis stood out with 40 points to win the day and the B Grade. Alby Ireland s as always was consistent in the A Grade to win there with 34 points, whilst Will DuBois finished up with 33 points to win the C Grade. Alex Morgan also came in close but was rewarded with the Nearest The Pin on the second hole.
The golf continues this week with a Par Round on Sunday, check that day off…April 26th, the day after ANZAC Day. Looking forward to seeing golfers ready and willing!

16/04/2026

The Hawker Golf Club season starts this Saturday with a Stableford round. The course is looking magnificent after the recent plentiful rains and the scrapes will be a good pace. Daren O’Neill will be on tees which are open from 11.30am. Come along for a great day and enjoy some drinks at the bar whilst catching up on the footy afterwards.

Cancer Day Event Launches a Big Month of Golf
The last month of the golf season was one of success for the golf club, starting with the Cancer Day Fundraiser and wrapping with a conclusion to our season where major club events were decided. Starting off with the Cancer Day numbers out on Saturdays were at a high, with 32 players turning out for the Ambrose event to start things off.
Played in good conditions the Cancer Day had the field and good golf to match, with regulars and social players joining up to have some fun out on the day. Winners on the day were decided on the team handicaps in the end, with the Team DuBois, led by Ben, with Will, Ollie, Ann, Frank, Helen and Michael scoring 51, but Netting 34.94, taking out the day over Team Webb, led by Saul, with Louise, Kellie, Peter, Ben and Stuart, also scoring 51, but Netting 35.67 for the day. Coming in third with a Nett 37, was Bekky, Noah, Jordan, Kirsty, Katrina and Andrew, with Katrina taking out the Long Putt from the edge of the 9th hole.
The first Saturday in September saw seven players turn out in very windy conditions for the Stableford competition. In spite of the winds players fought hard to keep their scores up. In the challenging conditions Scott Teague stepped up to win the day with a solid score of 34 points, just below his handicap but probably well above considering the conditions played in. Big time shot play was the order of the day, and Scott worked the ball around the course with his power stroke play. Alby Ireland also turned out and made Scotty work for his points, finishing just one stroke short on 33 points. Other solid contributors were Brendan McInnis, on 30 points and Alex Morgan in fourth place on 28 points, Brendan doubling up to also score the Nearest the Pin, with Scott and Alby taking the Ball prizes.
The club championship finals were part of this month as well. First up here was the C Grade Final played between Angus McInnis and Andrew McInnis in the week before September 13th, with Angus’ good season form continuing as he won the final by a convincing margin, around 6 up with 5 to play. A Par Round was played on the 13th, with seven players turning out. The course continued to be entertaining and interesting, forcing players to earn wins on each hole. The result for the day was a win for Will DuBois, finishing on +1, and also scoring the Nearest the Pin on the 6th hole. Ball winners behind Will were Ben DuBois, in second place, just ahead of Angus McInnis in third place.
The A Grade and B Grade Finals were also played on the day, with Ben DuBois playing Alby Ireland and Daren O’Neill up against Mark McAuley, both finals set to be played best over 27 holes. The competition was tight in both matches. The B Grade saw Mark McAuley take out a big lead of four holes up early, with Daren O’Neill chasing back to take a lead early in the second nine. It was close play on every hole with some big highlights, including Mark’s putting where on the 9th hole he hit a putt from over forty feet to a few inches from the hole. Come the 18th and holding a one stroke lead, Mark was in almost the same position and needing a good putt. Just to prove the first time around was no fluke, Mark’s putt saw the ball drop and Daren miss his putt from just over two metres to lose the hole. It proved to be an important match moment, a lead that McAuley held onto despite the margin narrowing to one hole at the 12th hole as after this he pushed on with some crucial wins to take out the match on the 25th hole, four up with two to play. The match between Ben and Alby was even tighter with both players holding the lead at different stages of the match. Play was tight as Ben played the big drives and Alby relied on his ability to hit the fairway. The match went all the way to the last hole with Ben needing a win to take it further, but Alby held his nerve to sink a two metre putt to close out the opportunity for Ben, winning on the 27th.
Closing day for the season was on September 20th and the good numbers of golfers turning out continued. It has been a great season and just to prove it we had eleven players turn up for the Stableford round, in good weather but the Wardsweed starting to make it’s presence felt on fairway. Will DuBois continued his good form over the end of the season to post another handicap breaking score of 37 points, his second winning week in a row and well deserved. On another good day of golf, Adam Gill stroked in 35 points to take out the A Grade and Angus McInnis finished with 32 points to take out the Bs. Other solid scores were out there too, with Alex Morgan scoring 33 points but behind Will’s C Grade winning 37, and Ben DuBois behind Adam with 32 points, good solid scores in the upper 20s followed this. Alex Morgan gained some sense of balance with the result by taking out the Nearest the Pin on the challenging second hole, whilst the ball winners were Will and Adam.
Taking the season into overtime, Daren O’Neill and Alby Ireland then turned out on AFL Grand Final Day to play their own final, the McAuley Handicap Match Play, sponsored by our generous supporters Michael and Marlene McAuley. Turning out for moral support over the nine holes were also Daniel S***k, Harry McAuley, Lachlan Hilder and Angus McInnis. The final proved to be a tight one, with the first two holes shared before trading wins on the third and fourth holes saw the match still level. Daren then scored pars on holes five to seven to take a three hole lead after the first nine. Alby then struck back to win the tenth, before doing what Alby does with a spectacular chip in on the eleventh for a birdie to make the margin just the one hole. Just as things got tight however, Daren then won the next three holes with par scores, the tight par four third, the par three fourth and the par four fifth to gain a significant lead, shutting Alby out with a half on the next hole to win the final four up with three to play. A great final then adjourned to watch the AFL final and down a few rewarding drinks.
It has been a great season in 2025, with a lot of highlights, including the Hawker Open turnout, representation at the Orroroo Open and Quorn Opens and successful Ambrose days. Junior turnouts have been fantastic and the main club competitions played to close and competitive conclusions. This season in particular has been our best season for player turnout in recent years. The groundwork has been laid for another great season in 2026.

Splosh Splash Slide Freeze!

What goes splish, splash, splosh, can freeze your arms off and almost snap you in half at the groin? .............Hawker Golf Course last Sunday afternoon! Nine players turned out on said Sunday afternoon, with three fortunates having tested the water.....(no that was Sunday) on Saturday afternoon. A great total of 12 players over a cold weekend, good testament to our numbers and enjoyment this year.

Being a club championships qualifying round players arrived ready to put in their all, some of them oblivious to the potential of some rain......how could it rain in Hawker! The players all teed off in what initially seemed to be potentially hospitable conditions but with the threatening grey skyline north of Hawker. Over the first nine players gave the course a high quality test out, with Alby Ireland enjoying the cold and potential rain with a good protective coat to stay warm and dry. A couple of sprays of micro rain caused players to keep an eye on things. Other players competing in the McAuley Trophy also made a good start to the round with Daren O’Neill and Chris McAuley sharing the wins early and coming in at half time with no halved holes. O’Neill especially enjoyed the third hole with a solid tee shot, followed by a six iron from 145m onto the scrape to roll in a birdie putt on the third hardest hole, followed however by a tee shot on the fourth which drifted with the wind over the fence. Groups in fact were making good progress as they kept their eyes on the incoming weather.

Playing the tenth hole on however the conditions started to become more challenging. The first two groups out – Chris McAuley, Harry McAuley, Daren O’Neill and Ben DuBois, Alby Ireland and Jeff Hounsell paused at the tenth hole as realisations of cold winds, rain and ‘oh my god where is my wet weather gear?’ settled in. The rain started to pe*****te everything, down through the clothing and inside gloves, with a curious cold sensation that caused us to huddle further behind the insufficient vegetation at the back of the tenth hole. With this the Hawker Clay became ready for a trial run at any potential pottery wheel or the Hawker Area School Art room as clay raised up with buoyant water to produce an interesting sensation that clung to wheels and shoes and challenged one’s sense of balance.

The weather cleared to expose a few episodes of winter sun that warmed and temporarily dried wet bodies partially. But the episodes continued several times over the last nine holes as players showed a great sense of competition and determination to stay out there and achieve a good last qualifying score. Repeated rain did bring new sensations not experienced on the golf course for quite a few years. O’Neill’s tee shot to the right of the eleventh (number two) scrape was in a good position proximally to the hole but tested the traction on his golf shoes as he practised wet weather stepping on a wet clay pan, mud building, feet sliding, water accumulating around feet, an unusual sensation that all players were facing.

Alby Ireland worked his way around for a great round but on the fourteenth (fifth fairway) the combination of wet weather and wind caused him to skim the top of the creek bank probably for the first time in years for him at Hawker. The rain continued in bursts and players continued to slide around the course in the different conditions as we realised where the higher and lower points around the course were!

Come the sixteenth (seventh fairway) and Chris McAuley negotiating the right hand side fairway ditch was forced into a partial ‘split’ as legs involuntarily moved outwards. On the next hole O’Neill found out that it paid to not stand in the one spot more than a few seconds in some places when he had an ‘airy’ as his feet moved on his down swing...., the situation was retreived still with a five on the hole.

Players found their way around the course to finish their rounds and keep their cards dry. Players retrieved semi dry property from their golf bags and prepared at the end of the rounds to find ways of cleaning off clay from wheels, axles and shoes. Scores were solid and below par for some, a great result in the conditions. Winner for the day in the A Grade with a remarkable 76, Nett 66 was Alby Ireland who totally defied the conditions to produce a quality and consistent round of golf. Topping the B Grade was Daren O’Neill who shot an 85, Nett 67 also overcoming the conditions and the airy on the seventeenth hole. The C Grade winner was Andrew McInnis, also with a Nett 67, a 95 off the stick. The grade winners also took away extra prizes in the ball competition as well.

It was a challenging but rewarding day as players started to sort out qualification in a couple of competitions. Alby Ireland and Stewart Shute qualified for the Club Championships A Grade final, whilst Daren O’Neill and Mark McAuley lined up now for the B Grade and Andrew McInnis will play Angus McInnis in the C Grade. In the McAuley trophy O’Neill defeated Chris McAuley to qualify for the final.

The next round will be our Cancer Day Ambrose Day, with the club asking all helpers to support on the scrapes and tees. This will be followed the next weekend by the Quorn Open on Sunday August 31st.

Quality Golf at Hawker Open

The biggest event of the golfing year was held in Hawker last Saturday with 26 players turning out for the Hawker Open from locations far and wide. It was a great day for the golf as players started with a shotgun start, teeing off from a variety of tees. In addition to the sun being out mostly, an appreciative growing cover of green matter was starting to build up!

The benefits of good conditions for golf is good scores at golf, and last Saturday demonstrated this with players hitting close to or breaking their handicaps. Shots were clean and consistent across most players and dangerous holes such as the third had less influence on the final scores.

The A Grade was especially typical of the high standard of golf with some impressive scores coming in. The eventual winner of the A Grade and the Open Championship was Liam Bury from Quorn, who shot 73 off the stick, in a round of many clean shots and big drives off the tees. In second place for the grade was Mark Britza, also with an impressive round of 76 off the stick, finishing in close behind Bury. In the Handicap event Alby Ireland came out on top, also finishing with a score of 79, Nett 69, the same as Bury and Britza for the Nett, great to see three players with Nett scores in the 60s. Of the rest of the A Grade field it was good to see a variety of players finishing Nett scores in the low 70s, including Ben DuBois, Ken Anderson, and G Fuller.

The competition in the B Grade finished up being dominated by Chris McAuley for the stroke prize, with Chris finishing up with a powerful 78 off the stick, a handicap score of 61 showing how well he played. Coming in second place with a good score on most other days was John Sheehan, with 82 off the stick (Nett 69), still an inform effort! The good news continued in the Handicap competition here with Daren O’Neill winning with a Nett 68 (86 off the stick), with a group of players also finishing once again in the low Nett 70s, including Mark McAuley and Rod Bollinger.

The C Grade was also very competitive, and it was good to have a large field of nine players competing here. It was good to see Scott Teague continue his revival here, finishing with the top score of 41 Stableford points, with local junior Harry McAuley in second with a quality score of 38 points, and Alex Morgan third with 36 points.

It was a good day of golf for all of us, with some long drives and NTPs also won, but gone missing at the time of publication! Our winter of golf continues this Sunday with the previously postponed fourth round of the club championship being held. Andrew McInnis is down to be the starter, and is teaming up with Mark McAuley to get the scrapes ready for action! Lets come out for another great day of golf on an increasingly green course!
