Today, the final day of our exhibition, is the anniversary of Frida Kahlo’s death in 1954.

During a stay at the English Hospital in Mexico City from 1950 to 51, Kahlo invited her friend, the photographer Juan Guzmán, to document long hours spent decorating her plaster corset, entertaining herself with toys, and painting her family tree. Kahlo’s love of Mexican tradition and her wry sense of humour meet in this poignant image. ‘Calaveras’ (sugar skulls) are traditionally made as sweet offerings to deceased loved ones during ‘Día de los Muertos’ (Day of the Dead) celebrations; they are sometimes inscribed with names of departed souls. Kahlo holds a calavera inscribed with her own name.

Despite almost relentless experiences of illness and pain, and regular periods of loneliness and depression, Kahlo’s passion for life, love, art, and Mexico sustained her. Her friends describe her humour, curiosity, and her infectious ‘alegría’ (joy). The inscription on her final painting has come to represent this legacy: ‘Viva la vida’, long live life.

To the thousands who joined us over the past four months, we thank you! It’s been an unforgettable journey, and we’ve loved sharing this extraordinary exhibition with you.

The Gallery will remain open, with our collection still on display.
