Our Story

Butler Market Gardens (Aust) is an Australian owned, vertically integrated, vegetable & herb farming company. Having complete control of its supply chain allows it to grow, harvest, pack, market and distribute its products nationally. Butler Market Gardens has supplied direct to major retailers for over 40 years. It is respected within the industry for high quality products and with its ability to change and adapt to trends provides a superior level of service to its customers.

The story of 5th generation grower Peter Butler started in 1969 when he started clearing scrub and black berries on a sand hill behind the Kingston Centre in Cheltenham. Peter had access to the family rhubarb crowns and was motivated to continue vegetable farming even though his father Bill advised him to take up a trade.

A short period of corporate work with Lamson Paragon Ltd, as well as working as a forklift driver in the Melbourne Market for Frank Montague, allowed Peter to supplement his income and keep his market gardening dream alive. Bill & his brother Lenny Butler helped Peter get the farm up and running and when their ruby red Rhubarb variety was ready to pick, Peter was able to gain much attention from green grocers and supermarket chains in the early 70’s.

Well known for parsnips, leeks, dutch carrots, salad onions, cucumbers and even turnips in the 80’s, Peter was farming 50 acres in Cheltenham and a new 17 acre farm in Heatherton to provide a 12 month income. During the early 90’s, as Peter’s business continued to grow, Butler Market Gardens focussed on growing more niche products, such as buk choy, wild rocket, baby spinach and decorative lettuce.
